The ketogenic diet is one of the latest health fads that people are following to lose weight and to improve overall health. But many people suffer from the side effects of it as they adapt to the new diet. The adverse effects of following this diet are known as keto flu. And today, we are talking about the symptoms and how one can get rid of the same.

First, let me explain what happens to the body when one follows ketogenic aka keto diet. For the unversed, our body has been using carbs as the main energy source in the form of glucose. But in this diet, one has to restrict the intake of carbs by getting very less or no carbs. So, our body switches to another fuel source that is fat as the carbs are substantially less. So, our body burns ketones from fats instead of glucose.

Constant intake of fat and protein and fewer carbs keeps our body leads to the state of fat burning which is known as ketosis. While the diet is safe for many some people may witness some side effects aka keto flu during the initial days of the diet.

For the unversed, the drastic reduction of carbs gives a shock to the body and withdrawal-like symptoms appear before one can get used to it. Below are symptoms one can experience and the same can be mild or severe depends from person to person.

Symptoms

  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Constipation and Diarrhea
  • Headache and dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Cramps
  • Dizziness
  • Concentration issues
  • Sleeping issues

How to get rid of it?

Drink water- One of the best ways to clear the signs is to drink more water as by following this diet, water from the body gets excreted quite quickly as glycogen which holds water in the body gets low.

Avoid heavy workouts- Give body rest for a few days. Activities such as running, weight lifting and intense cardio can make you very weak further. One can go for light activities such as yoga and walking etc.

Eat healthy foods- Just fats and proteins may not help you to achieve weight loss. One should also include potassium-rich and keto friendly foods for the proper balance of nutrients and electrolytes in the body. Also, make sure you eating enough fats as that is the main fuel of the body if followed this diet.

Sleep more- Lack of sleep will only make things worse and aggravate the signs of keto flu.

How long the keto flu stays?

While for few this flu may last for around a week or so for few this can go for more weeks.

Bottomline
Keto diet may be beneficial but this may not suit many. This diet is especially a no-no for pregnant or breastfeeding women, kids and for those who are suffering from health conditions such as diabetes, kidney, liver or pancreatic issues.

Keto flu symptoms are commonly found in many who shift to the new ketogenic diet. And those who have been on heavy carb diet of bread, pizza, burgers and pasta may experience more. But if you are feeling particularly unwell and have these symptoms for way too long then it’s best to contact a doctor for treatment.
