Ketogenic or keto or Low Carb High Fat (LCHF) diet is one of the common and one of the highly googled health topics. Today, we are talking about one of the key tools of the keto diet that is MCT oil. Keto diet followers must be knowing that MCT, i.e. medium-chain triglycerides is incorporated to aid weight loss. But today, we will look at the oil and its benefits.

What is MCT oil?

The oil has saturated fatty acid that is also found in coconut and coconut oil. During the keto diet, one has to consume more fat from the diet with fewer carbs, so that our body can utilize dietary fat to create energy for the body.

The fats found in MCT oil is medium-chain triglycerides, as the name suggests, the medium chain of fats are created and they can be easily digested and also helps in ketosis. For the unversed, intake of MCT oil leads to more production of ketones (produced during the breakdown of fats) which leads to ketosis which is the fat-burning state. This particular oil is extracted from coconut oil and can be found in palm oil as well as dairy products.

Apart from helping in weight management, it also aids in managing diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy and autism. It also optimizes the growth of good bacteria, supports the gut lining, improves cognitive function, fights inflammation due to antioxidant properties and also improves cardiovascular health. It also helps those who are on intermittent fasting, as the ketones keep your energy up and hunger is suppressed.

How to use MCT oil?

One can use this as a keto supplement and add them to smoothies, bulletproof coffee and salads.

How much MCT oil one should use?

Your body takes time to adjust to a new introduction in diet so firstly start off with teaspoon or even less than that. If you feel that your body is supporting it, then slowly increase the intake to one tbsp per day.

Bottom line, it is important to note that only consuming MCT oil for ketosis is not the only way to lose weight as it is just one part of the keto diet. So, apart from this, you still have to eat clean, high fat and low carb diet to be in the state of ketosis. Also, one should know that there are many side effects including indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, irritability and intestinal gas among others.
