Tea tree oil is one of the popular essential oils and many of us use it for aroma purpose by adding it in an oil diffuser and many even use it as an insect repellant. But there are tons of benefits which are great for skin and hair especially. Speaking of the oil, the same is derived from an Australian native plant called Melaleuca alternifolia and that's why it is widely used in Australia.

1. Treats acne and other skin conditions

One of the best ways to treat acne and other skin issues is with the help of this essential oil. Yes, the same is one of the best anti-acne medications. So, if you are suffering from acne then you can treat it with a mixture of one part tea tree oil with nine parts water. Apply the mixture to affected areas once or twice a day. It also a natural remedy for ringworm, psoriasis and eczema, cuts, boils and razor burns among others.

2. Helps to control dandruff

As per many studies, tea tree oil is quite effective to treat dandruff as well. So, those who are suffering from dandruff issue can treat it with the same. So, add one or two drops of the oil to 12 drops of carrier oil and massage your scalp and later wash hair with a shampoo. You can add a few drops to a dollop of shampoo while washing as well.

3. Improves the health of nails

Tea tree oil is one of the best antiseptic and aids in fighting bacterial and fungal infections. So, if you have brittle and yellow nails then treat the same with the oil. Mix half a teaspoon of vitamin E oil with a few drops of tea tree oil and rub the mixture to your nails and massage it for a few minutes. Leave it for around 30 minutes and then rinse off the mixture with lukewarm water. It also prevents nail fungus.

Bad breath is one of the common issues and the same can be a major turn off and embarrassment. The change in a breath happens because of the build-up of bacteria on tongue, throat and tonsils. Tea tree oil has antimicrobial properties and the same can kill the bacteria.

5. Helps in relieving cough

Those who frequently get common cold and cough then instead of popping a pill can go for this natural remedy. One can either diffuse a few drops at home or inhale it directly from the bottle. Another common way is by adding 1–2 drops of tea tree with few drops of coconut oil and rub the same on the chest and neck for relief.

Bottom line is never use the essential oil directly. Make sure to dilute it first before application. Also, make sure you do not ingest it. If you are using for the first time, then test it on a small area of skin as people with sensitive skin can experience irritation.
