Jury's out on 'RA.One', earns Rs.18 cr on first day

Shah Rukh Khan's most ambitious sci-fi thriller hit the screens on Diwali and while some critics gave it a thumbs up for blending elegance of Hollywood with Indian sensibilities, others panned the superhero drama by labelling it just as a video game. The reviews notwithstanding, it has managed to collect Rs.18 crore at the home box office on the opening day.

However, as predicted by trade pundits, the film couldn't break the first day collection records of Salman Khan starrer "Bodyguard", which earned Rs.22 crore in the domestic market on the opening day.

In the onverseas market, the Red Chillies Entertainment and Eros International co-production raked in Rs.6.5 crore.

If reviewers have a different take on the film, viewers are also reacting differently but theatre owners predict good business in the coming week.

"Although the film has got mixed reviews, the first day has been really good. We witnessed more than 80 percent occupancy," a source in PVR told IANS.

"Moreover, the extensive marketing of the film has created a curiosity among people, who are eager to see what is the film all about," the source added.

Cinemax witnessed an average footfall on the first day.

"There could be two reasons - the 3D version of the film was made available a little late. Although in metros it was fine, but in other cities due to delayed release in 3D we had to cancel some of the shows," said Sunil Punjab, CEO of Cinemax.

"Also, we saw a decline in the occupancy in the evening as it was Diwali time and people were busy in Diwali puja. But today (Thursday) the response has been encouraging since morning we have had good number of people coming to see the film," he added.

Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the Rs.150 crore film, which also stars Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in prominent roles, was released in as many as 3,500 screens across the world.

Even before the film reached the theatres, its makers earned money by selling its satellite rights reportedly for for Rs.35 crore and the distribution rights for Rs.77 crore.

The film's highlight is high-tech VFX shots, which were outsourced from multiple specialty studios in London, Paris and Bangkok, as also the US.

Puneet Sahay of Spice Cinemas, however, informed that the film is not appealing to adults.

"Although Shah Rukh's acting is good, 'RA.One' is basically a film for children as it boast of lot of animation and special effects. Adults are not actually liking the film. However, it is likely to do well in the coming days," Sahay said.

"Actually, it's nothing more than a video game," said college student Akhil Sharma

no matter what it's a bad movie. no script, cheap jokes, lead actors/tress hammed to the hilt, stuffed with ll the cheap gimmick this movie is dream project turn nightmare. The action sequence shown in the movies are done in commercials in west so it's not like a great feat. all and all a total waste of money and time.

The entire Srk fan base was behind this movie, Raone could have made 180 crores in a day but the dumb Sanjay PC dream sequence ruined multiple viewings for most Raone fans.

why is a work of art a movie reduced to merely the figures it makes or monetary records it breaks. Whatever happened to enjoying movies for the sake of entertainment and having a good time at the theatres. BW movies are becoming boring business models crunching numbers at this rate the younger generation will ditch it sooner than later becuz in the end it all boils down only to economics not how much a critic or viewer loved or hated a movie and why.

First off I will always cherish the fond memory of watching Raone with S R K. He brought his dream project to us and made fans feel special. Like a superhero he delivered at the Premieres and promo tours all by himself. Hats off. It truly became a memorable experience. Watching Srk sans any distractions is a huge turn on and fans loved him to bits. Raone is an amazing action film with state of the art VFX effects. Loved the special effects, the computer graphics were out of the bw world. The ACTION is the best I have seen in a bolly flick. I would have had loved the Jackie Chan as the real RaOne he looked more the part. He was good as Raone. Like Agent Smith of the Matrix the ending would have been more powerful.
I LOVED: Being an action film fan I absolutely loved every single scene of fast paced action especially the cars and the train wreck. The train scenes were mindblowing. Srk as G.One excelled in the action.

Not Liking: Arjun as Raone not so much given the fact that he was the central character of the movie as suggested by the title. He didn't Impress much with his mannerisms upon becoming the model. Like Raone did when he landed in the chinese mother's home and was believable.
The kid saves his father's ashes and forgets about it he could have used them to create G.one and made the emotional G.One believable instead of merely a saved folder. But why on earth would a geek kid who is embarrassed by his dad's mushy love and himself loves teasing his classmates with teacher pranks dream of a PC dangling in her ripped bra and bare legs from the sky. The ridiculous unwanted PC's ooohh aahhh's dream sequence was the only eyesore, it was lame for an action flick. Women normally kick S in an action dream sequence. The worst thing was the comic Khalnayak part totally demolished the dreaded evil effect of Raone. Thus Raone was never scary...didn't look nor behave menacing/terrorising enough. Only Kareena was afraid of the mighty Raone no one else was. Sanjay Dutt's entry diluted it. Raone had the potential to become the most dreaded evil force and villain in the history of bolly cinema unfortunately he didn't. Courtesy the Khalnayak who derailed him in the very beginning. The tamil/south take was ott and not needed. Even the great Rajni Sir was not required taking the kid to a Rajni temple or movie would have sufficed. Not every film should be culturalised imo to infuse indianess in it. If I had a say... I would have chopped off the Khalnayak and Tamil bits. They totally sucked. Instead worked on presenting the family's loss and transition of the kid where he struggles to adjust from a foreign culture to Indian culture and succeeds with the help of G.One. Kareena was ok she looked and acted it well. Her book of profanity never got written nor published in the movie. So it seemed an exercise in futility. The little kid acted really well. Srk was amazing as G.one. Always wanted to see some real action in an srk movie and he rendered it in many scenes. Well Done.

pinkvilla do post this I am sick and tired of typing again. Or remain stuck to adulterated mush.
