When most of filmdom is raving about positive changes in Indian cinema, choreographer Saroj Khan begs to differ and rues that the quality of dance has gone down in movies.
"I think dance has changed a lot. Nowadays, there are only beats. There is no grace left in dance. We see only acrobatics today. This is successful because we are in the habit of copying the West. We just can't leave it," she said.
"We don't think about our own culture. If we learn from our own culture, it will be very tough. I feel that dance is going down," she added.
She blames item numbers for the downfall.
"Now so many item numbers have come up. Earlier, people used to appreciate Helen. She had grace and elegance. Now everyone is ready to remove their clothes," she said.
She was speaking Friday at the inauguration of Cinema 100, a festival organised by the students of Subhash Ghai's Whistling Woods International to celebrate hundred years of Indain movies.
Saroj Khan, who worked with dancing divas like Sridevi and Madhuri, seems to be impressed with Sonakshi Sinha whom she trained for director Prabhu Deva's film "Rowdy Rathore".
"Sonakshi did everything that I asked her to do and Prabhu Deva approved it. She is very graceful," she said.

waaw.. rowdy rathore is a grace..someone has lost her nuts seriously.....
seems that she has forgotten abt her dhak dhak days
---------
Madhuri's dhak dhak dance steps were vulgar...but Madhuri's grace made it seem beautiful rather than "vulgar"
wow look who is talking .loll she nd madhuri were the queen of vulgar dance moves in 90s.seems that she has forgotten abt her dhak dhak days
These days the dances are more "vulgar" rather than beautiful or graceful.
I do not find any kind of "elegance" in katrina or priyanka's dancing!
Also, most of these movies these days are filled with "item songs," which is completely a waste of time. I agree that having item songs make the movies more 'masaledar," but that doesnt mean "every SINGLE movie" needs an item song per hour! For ex - Nathalia Kaur's dancing in tht item song was 100% bullshit and nothing else....they feel that such songs will increase the audience?! Now, if the movie is a pure thrash with few "Beauties," the movie will STILL fail anywaysssss!! Item songs in few movies are acceptable, but not in every single movies! I am sooo BORED of these!
Madhuri's dancing in "dhak dhak" showed that even the most "vulgar" steps can be done gracefully. Sheila ki jawani was amazing as an item song, but look at katrina's dancing! She looked like a mountain with no expression at all........
But I love Malaika Arora's item songs, she really makes her steps "sexy," esp in Anarkali Disco Chali & Munni Badnam. I do not expect all of these actresses to be in the same level as Madhuri, Sridevi or Aish's dancing, but if you cant dance, then why the hell do you even try to be the best dancer and be an item girl??

I AGREE 100% people want easy fame and will do ANYTHING to get it. its really cheap, distasteful, disgusting, and shows a persons character. I personally hate malaika arora, she turns every item number into a striptease or cabaret, I dont know how her inlaws and husband are not ashamed of her.
And wht about THE other cheap disgusting who.res like deepika, bipasha, priyanka, kareena etc Who even dont know wht clothes are. nowadays i can't even decently sit and watch TV becoz all u see in hindie channels r se.x And P. orn shame on this disgusting industry

She is completely right. No grace, no class, no elegance left in dance any more. Just a bunch of girls wearing revealing clothes, shaking their butts and doing suggestive moves! Eughh.

Saroj Khan was addressing at whistling Woods Film school in Mumbai on Indian Cinema completing 100 years.
I don't understand why she had to go there to moan about all the negativities of dance in films. I am sure the students are smart enough to see what's happening to the song and dance routine and decide for themselves.
She should have stuck to giving some positive advice and good counselling instead of cribbing.
Saroj khan always complains of how bad things are in Bollywood nowadays. blah blah blah she goes on. Stupid woman.

I totally agree with Saroj Khan !! Yes katrina's dance is not graceful.she can't dance like sridevi, madhri, karisma kapoor ,ashwariya , prianka, silpa sheety, kareena or rani....
well, nobody appreciates dances these days.. they want fast track movies with girls who look hot and are grateful if there lines in the movies are kept to a mimimum... almost all girls who are 'actresses' these days are yesteryears Silk Smithas who look at easy ways of getting fame than putting in the effort to be more.. and i don't really find the audience to be interested in actresses trying to be more than that.. they just want masala movies that have no script just senseless item songs and some superstar...
I have no idea how many articles I've already read about her finding today's choreography distasteful. Her point has been made, there's no need to go on and on and on about it. She praised Kareena recently, and now Sonakshi. So she should concentrate on the work she is doing instead of criticizing other types of choreography. That's being quite disrespectful towards other choreographers. Of course she is entitled to her opinion, and her point might be valid. But she already stated that in the past.
Or may be too much compettition from other choreographers... There's Farah Khan, Vaibhahi Merchant some others may be. But yes she also has a point. Songs like Chikini Chameli, Sheila,Munni their catchy songs when you hear them. However visually horrendous! Top that the vulgar lyrics! Just plain tacky.
totally agree with her and it's very true!
You mean Katrina Kaif doing suggestive moves with her crotch or shaking her butt is not graceful?
