An umbrella body of 21 medical institutions Wednesday asked Bollywood star Aamir Khan to apologize for accusing doctors of malpractices in his TV talk show "Satyamev Jayate".
Medscape India said the representation of malpractices supposedly perpetrated by doctors was "rather sad" and Aamir Khan should offer his apologies.
"It is rather sad that doctors should be made the object of such shameless, unilateral scrutiny," Himanshu Mehta, co-founder and advisor to Medscape India, said.
After highlighting social issues affecting Indian society, Aamir Khan, in the fourth episode of his show, turned the spotlight on healthcare and malpractices in the medical profession.
He highlighted unethical practices, corruption and scandalous revelations in medical treatment.
"Aamir Khan is my favourite actor and he should stick to making films," said another doctor, Sunita Dube, president of Medscape.
"Surprisingly, no doctors' body has spoken against Aamir yet. We need to stand united against such blatant lies. We are going to write a scathing letter demanding an apology from him," Dube said.
Medscape pointed out that doctors were subjected to assault without any fault and many people didn't understand the pressures of the profession.
"Where is Aamir Khan when doctors are assaulted? Where is he when we give free treatment to the needy?" asked Kishore Taori, president of the Maharashtra Medical Council that is associated with Medscape.

He's just making the uninformed ppl be aware of such doctors. wouldn't u want the doctor to put ur health above ur medical bills or how he can harvest ur organs for money? ignoring the problem or blaming the messenger will not make it go away.
He wasn't saying every doctor is a bussinessman, he just pointed out the ones that r out there to get money from naive patients. It happens in USA too (though the doctors who do this r mostly foreign read Indian). There was an undercover journalist who went to an indian doctor and she had medicare, the doctor wrote bunch of diseases and ailments that the woman didn't have just so she could charge her insurance more money as well as getting comissions for perscribing needless medicines. as a rule I don't ever go to an Indian doctor or dentist, most of them have bad bed side manners, especially towards other indians (I know so cus my mom has been stuck with some of them since she didn't know much about them at the beginning). Anyways the business minded doctors r worse in India and can attest to it myself because I experienced some of the stuff when i was on a visit to india.

Is this "umbrella" of doctors living under a rock? Seems so! What I like about Aamir's show is that, yes he pulls up the gory details of horrifying stories but he also shows, people who are in the same profession/situation and staying true to the nature of their life/work. Particular to this matter, Aamir also brought up doctors who denied to be businessmen more than doctors and decided to choose the right path. His show is not to defame anyone but to tell people what can possibly happen. This umbrella of doctors should actually ask for those doctors to apologize who have become more like businessmen and treating patients as business transactions. It's due to them that other doctors are being defamed, not Aamir!
These people need to get their heads examined... Aamir has clearly mentioned in his show again n again that he is merely telling the facts of today's society and only talking about issues that are normally brushed under the carpet... And this news only confirms that, no one wants to see the mirror... No one wants the truth to get out and be talked about... Now they are worried what if government and people become aware of whats happening behind closed doors, what would happen to their "extended income"... What losers, some professions are meant to help society not fill up your pockets... Shame on these "business minded doctors" (should be just called businessmen)
And Aamir Khan has more than 80% of the nation with him on this, so these businessmen doctors can go take a hike... Its high time someone brought these topics up so our new generation can see whats right and whats wrong...
It is a legitimate issue that needed to be brought out. If doctors can make councils then they can most certainly keep the bad apples in check. Where were these body of doctors when female foeticide is happening?
This is very true though. My second cousin is very wealthy and a doctor. He just has a low income clinic and usually only looks at low income people-charging very little(Both his wife and his family are very wealthy, so he does it more as charity.) So many times he has other doctors, labs etc. come and offer him comissions to send his patients over for uneeded tests and other specialists. He says many specialists/labs etc all offer bribes/comission to doctors like him so they can tell the patient some lies and make them take some tests. of course if you go to one of the big hospitals, they make you tests wether you need them or not. You don't know and if life is at risk, well you do it. But this is apparantely a big scam . My cousin was saying he could easily earn 30k+ a month just in comissions alone for his referals, if he choose to do it-and that is in black money, so no taxes.

The FACT is that this is happening EVERYDAY in INDIA! Remember the segment where the women from an entire village had their uterus removed because of a corrupt doctor? Or the major who lost his wife? Shouldn't this useless doctor's association first apologize for that? These doctor's from this pathetic association probably love making money from a corrupt system and are worried that they might lose their income and that's why they are doing all this. SHAME ON THESE DOCTORS!
Do the doctors in our country have any sense? The show is not about showing the good things done by everyone.It is about stopping certain problems which are never bought to attention.Aamir is doing it the best and with full proof and facts.Calling it as a lie in itself is a crime.

Its not that doctors are afraid of fingers being raised at their profession. Its about showing the HALF TRUTH and providing biased statistics.
The show is severely under-researched. You can't present a social issue thoroughly in such a format and time constraint, you will end up oversimplifying a lot of things. Unfortunately people are too enamoured by the whole "perfectionist" aura to admit that Aamir's show is less than perfect, much less.
Amir has not done anything that he should regret, infact I proud of him!
I dont see why he should apologize. He did talk about the good things some doctors do and he was only asking people who are scamming to stop. Bad things did NOT come from his mouth. He had guests who are in medical field who were talking about the scams and the things other doctors do. so why should he aplogize? these doctors are afraid that everyone knows about their scams and they can't make easy money like they use to??!?!?

He NEVER said all doctors are bad!!! Why r they taking it so personally!!! I've worked for a medical centre for years and I know that the 30-50% cut for doctors is true!! They suggest expensive tests for minor complaints, charge NRI's double the amount etc. He spoke about the bad part, the medical negligence, malpractice part. He ALSO had doctors like Dr Shetty on the panel to talk about the good that the genuine doctors do.
Just bcoz your community is offended, u want him to apologise?? So shouldn't we apologise to the thousands of policemen we call corrupt...defaming them all when they sacrifice their lives and family time to protect us?? Shouldn't we apologise to our local politician who works for the betterment of his locality by calling them all thieves?? Doctors deal with human lives and hence are above all professions. We call them noble and give them Godly status. For every true doctor, there are two who abuse this power!! Stop making everything about yourself. Aamir put up a great show...and stop jumping the gun, for all you know...there's a part II to that show and maybe he will delve deeper into the topic. Even if he doesn't, he just spoke the truth....and as we all know "truth is a bitter pill to swallow". Get over it!!!!!!

absolutely agree with you. I don't like indian media cause they only focus on the things that would get views...they dont hightlight the real news. Also people always want to point fingers at someone. I watched the episode and Aamir should not apologize to anyone cause he did say there are good doctors out there but he was trying to put it out there that to know the doctor your going to cause they might be bad people. I think some doctos take avantage of the less unfortunate cause they know they have a upper hand cause some people need their help.

I am a Doctor. And I myself do not agree to a greater part of wot was shown in d episode. Ofcourse it was not researched n worked out well..i found it a bit biased and one sided..not really showing both sides of the coin..n wot ws featured was merely the tip of the iceberg! I wud they rather not generalize the theorem. Not all Docs r baddies!

Amir was right in what he said, there are many greedy and unethical doctors unfortunately who simply get into this profession to mint money. They are a blot on this noble profession!
Oh please. He did mention that there are good ones too that work relentlessly for the betterment of people and the society. He gave emphasis on the ones that are in it for money. Are they looking for some kind of attention?? So sad. If someone is trying to good, there is always trying to pull the good person's leg and show fault. UGH!! us humans!

This shows that they can be so unreasonalble- not expecting this from doctors... oh wait..after the show.. nothing is reasonable when it comes to these greedy indian doctors.

apologize for what, he didnt mention bad side only. The system is messed up just ask people who lost their loved ones. He is trying to bring awareness so the doctors who are doing wrong just for the sake money should stop. If your conscious is clear and you are not doing anything wrong you shouldn't be worried then.

Dear Mr.Aamir Khan,
I have been trying
hard but cannot get over the fact that you can 'sell'
ignorance with such ease
and honour.
Though I agree to 'parts' of your show ,
Lets
first get the facts right.
1) You said patients
on dialysis live upto 15-20 years. Fact - The 5 year
survival rate of patients
on dialysis is about 25-30 % ( less than many
cancers). Renal transplant
remains the best available treatment option for chronic kidney disease. (I hope
you take responsibility for people who after
watching your show plan to not go
for kidney transplant and die in less than 5 years)
2) An
overenthusiasti c girl from the audience said that
her father was forced for an
emergency liver transplant '6-7 years' ago for
gastroenteritis .
Fact- Even
today there are ' a handful' of hospitals in India offering liver transplants.
To think that 6-7 years ago , just a gastroenteritis
patient was offered liver
transplant is not only improbable but technically
impossible.
3) A diabetic patient
blamed a doctor for losing a toe.
Fact- Lacs of
diabetic patients per year lose
entire limbs due to diabetic foot ( cellulitis and
gangrene) . Doctors go about
stepwise cutting off toes , then foot , even the leg upto above knee level in
order to save as much limb as possible. The patient
in your show might still be
able to walk just because of the timely action taken
by the surgeon.
Mr. Aamir Khan i am
not getting back at you because i took your show
personally. Yes , I agree that
there are doctors indulging in shameful
malpractices and even i know a few of
them. But i can proudly say i am surrounded by more doctors who work day and
night just to ensure that their patients get the best
possible treatment..The'
BAD' doctors should be punished and we all can
come together to ensure we do
not encourage such malpractices.
Secondly i would have
appreciated if you would have thrown some light
on the entrance examinations and
the hard work , dedication and sacrifices a doctor
needs to clear his MBBS, MD,
DM etc examinations. I wish you had spent half a day in the
emergency department and OPD of a Govt. Hospital
and realised that the work
timings, working conditions, lunch breaks,
doctor : patient ratio, hours of
sleep per week , living conditions in the hostel and the stipend is worse than
a class 4 labourer. You would have also
surprisingly realised that the
'DOCTORS' are the only 'FUNCTIONAL' part of a Govt.
Hospital which still caters
to thousands of patients in a day. When you compared statistics of U.K and
India , why didnt you include the salaries, living
standards and the doctor:
patient ratio the doctors have in developed
countries.
Coming to generic
drugs, Yes, a large amount of rural population
should have access to cheap
generic drugs. But one should not forget the
pharma companies that charge more
for the drugs are the ones that spend crores of rupees for research and
development of new drugs. Had there not been
drug trials no new drugs would
have been invented and we would have mortality rates compared to stone age.
Also i agree that
most doctors endorse certain brands of drugs
( which i do not deny may be for
s ome financial gains also ) because thay have faith
in the quality of the
'active drug' of certain companies. Yes many local companies manufacture
generic products ( which is a copy of the original
molecule discovered by the
expensive company which can be used for
unaffordable patients. But you did not mention that
many of these generic drugs are of substandard quality and are the reason of
many uncalled for deaths due
to drug reactions. Most doctors would not want to
take responsibilty of the
quality of the 'generic' drugs.
Lastly, What do you
mean when you say ' People of high IQ and desire
to earn money should not
become doctors'.
Why arent doctors allowed to
have an ambition ??
How can a
person who earns 4 crores for an episode of a so called 'social' show decide on
what should be an individual's ambition and
financial staus !!
Why can there be
no doctors who earn well for their professional
skills and do not indulge in
malpractices ?!
It just reflects your hypocrisy. I would like to offer
a few solutions to the problem.
a) ' BAD' doctors
indulging in malpractices should be suspended for
life. We need a strong
regulatory authority to publish expected treatment
'protocols' and punish
doctors found to be doing unethical practices.
b) Regulatory
authorities should also keep a check on the quality
of drugs being manufactured
and at the same time 'sold' at the local chemist.
c) Govt. medical
colleges and hospitals should multiply several folds,
increasing the number of
doctors in each department , improving the doctor:
patient ratio. Doctor's
salaries and living conditions should be looked after and should be comparable
to other professionals.
d) Regular CME'S and
licensing exams ( like other countries) every 5-10
years.
e) The Govt. should
spend 6-8% of GDP ON HEALTHCARE and a part of
which should also be committed to
the research and development of newer drugs.
f) No politician
should be allowed to be associated with any
private medical colleges.
g) The general public
should be educated well about common diseases
and the 'acceptable'
qualifications of the doctors.
These are just a few
points i can think of at the moment. I am sure had
you bothered to have a panel
discussion and find solutions in a healthy way, We
could come up with a lot
more viable solutions.
However you chose to
sensationalise your show, by hiring 'few' people
with 'fake' or 'amplified'
problems and shed a few tears.
Hope you understand
that Your allegations like '
HAMARE DESH KE
DOCTORS ITNE BIMAAR KYUN HAIN' and
'MAUT KE SAUDAGAR' are as serious as calling all
actors 'Rapists' (
after the shiney ahuja incident ) and all Muslims 'Terrorists' . Knowing that you
twisted not one but not many known medical
'facts' to strike a chord with the
'ignorant' 'naive' audience, How do you expect me
to have faith in you and the
stories you would project in the upcoming shows. You have betrayed a large
segment of the 'classes' as well as 'masses'.
All i can say is i
feel sad for the death of the 'image' you created in
our minds and hearts. An
unbiased Aamir who strives for nothing but the
truth and the betterment of the
society was after all a MYTH.

Aamir should NOT apologize. Each episode is a team effort and he solely did not come up with all those stats and figures. The people who were telling their stories were real people with real problems. Why are all these doctors offended? Do they feel bad about the harsh reality of the medical profession exposed on a public platform? Aamir is making money but he is also putting himself in danger by dealing with these controversial subjects. There is a huge pharmaceutical mafia in India. Do you think every person would have the courage to expose hidden issues like this?
Those doctors need a reality check. Aamir doesn't need to apologise to anyone. There was nothing wrong with the episode. People just can't accept they have issues and are always trying to get defensive.
Things showed in the show were not against doctors. They showed the truth what few group of doctors are doing. What ever was shown was for awareness among the general public. The motive is only awareness. Everybody is spreading that post against satyamev jayate..But nobody got time to think about the poor women of AP whose uterus had been unnecessarily removed. Being the part of medical profession we should accept what is true...!!!
Don't apologize Aamir, shame on these doctors who are not able to admit that there are many within their profession who abuse the system.... he presented the facts nothing else and stressed also that there many who are not doing what these greedy doctors do and he also invited them... those doctors who want him to apologize are those who don't want to change the system and continue the way it is, so they can continue using poor people
I am an educated and intelligent woman. When I was pregnant II was in India for the first few months., a reputed radiolotried to scare me that I needed an amnio coz there was something wrong with my scan. The first thing that crossed my mind was I need a second scan from a different person . The new radiologist (best in town) said there was nothing absolutely wrong with my scans. I also consulted 2 more gynos just to be sure and they assured me everything was fine.I went through 2 days of torment and spent an addtional Rs.6000 including blood tests jjust to get this verified. The first radilogist who tried to dupe me refused to give me an appointment to discuss the issue again and I travelled abroad a month later, she never met me. What should have cost me 2000 ended up costing 8000 and unnecessary worry.
Imagine someone less educated being duped like this, they would have gone for an amnio and put their baby at unnecessary risk of infection. Shame on these nasty doctors who trick innocent people but there r sone reliable doctors who r good. Trouble is u need several opinions to know who's lying and this costs money for poor people who may not be able to afford it and worry for others too.
Criticism shows Aamir's on the right track. Keep going Aamir. We trust you and we respect you. If Aamir has shown both sides, then why are they complaining?

AAMIR KHAN DID NOT SAY THAT ALL DOCTORS ARE BAD YOU FOOLS!!! HE ONLY HIGHLIGHTED THE ACTS OF THOSE THAT *ARE* CORRUPT. this is exactly why india is such a backward country...however hard some ppl like aamir try to open the eyes of indian society, there will always be a bunch of losers like this to bring those well-meaning ppl down. SO AGGRAVATING! whatever you do, DO NOT apologise aamir! i am a medical student myself, and i am disgusted in the indian healthcare system. these doctors need to take a good hard look at themselves...they're just cloaking their fear with defensiveness cos their ill-practices have been highlighted on national tv.

Mr. Kishore Taori, Aamir Khan did highlight the good doctors too on his show. Kindly watch the repeat! There are all kinds of people in all fields. Learn to accept it & imrpovise it instead of coaxing aamir khan.
