With a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role, nine-year-old Darsheel Safary has set a new record in the history of Indian cinema.

He breaks the 52-year old Filmfare tradition where no child actor has ever been nominated for this category. His nomination is well deserved. He earned rave reviews when he refused to accept the ‘Best Child Artiste’ award at the 14th Annual STAR Screen Awards and insisted that he should rather get the Best Actor award for his role in Taare Zameen Par .

The little wonder has no qualms about rubbing shoulders with Bollywood stalwarts including Shah Rukh Khan(chak de), Abhishek Bachchan(guru), Shahid Kapur(jab we met) and Akshay Kumar. While categories like Best Child Artist and Best Debut Performer seemed trivial for a performance that ought to be acknowledged for its sheer brilliance and merit, let’s not forget competing with King Khan is not an easy task. But the wonder kid still stands a chance for a Filmfare trophy provided SRK turns almighty and decides to opt out from the nominations.

When quizzed about this, here’s what King Khan had to say. “Well, every year new talent comes in this industry and the nomination gets younger and this time interestingly it’s a nine-year-old kid. Though I haven’t seen the film yet but from whatever I have heard from Aamir, this child has acted outstandingly. Maybe a time will come when even a kid who is not born would give me tough competition.”

Whether Darsheel would be able to beat King Khan and other Bollywood biggies remains to be seen. Meanwhile, we leave it up to you to decide whether SRK should step back.
