Rani and Ash both are way overrated as actresses, and beauty.
Though they have gotten their much deserved recognition as men users and homebreakers.

Aishwarya (not an ash hater, but she was always criticised for her bad acting) so i dont she should be alled overrated for that matter.

Acc to me only handful of ppl r natural actors (like we emote in normal life) - nasarudeen shah,Shabana azmi(today),vidya,konkona,ranbir etc. like aamir n hrithik are goods actors but overacts....like we nevr shiver while angry so its too much for my senses.

That Ajay man, Kajol and her husband are overrated. Also SRK movies at the moment are quite bad.

@ Anon Thu, 2012-03-22 06:32 - maybe you should read the complete Rediff article, and see that the reviewer is also praising rani for her good movies. Rediff is just calling a spade a spade, Rani notwithstanding. They have been criticizing everyone in the movie industry, because all actors have a chink in their armor or a redeeming quality. Nobody is perfect, so learn to take criticism like a trooper.

Rediff for some reason has something against Rani in the last few years so that article came as no surprise although it was shocking that they had to stoop so low!
Raja Sen is the most prominent journalist who work's for Rediff and those others are his friends and colleagues and write about Rani in a similar vein.
That Raja Sen is a big massive fan of Vidya Balan should come as no surprise to anyone. Just go check his twitter site! I noticed Raja Sen dismissing Rani's talent around the time of the release and aftermath of NOKJ. He kept belittling Rani's role and praising Vidya's. of course it is easy to see why"!
It is understandable that fans are biased and journalists too have their favourites but to be so openly biased based on personal liking is unprofessional! More so when one is judging talent in their reviews. Whilst Vidya is no doubt talented too to write of Rani's achievements in such a cavalier fashion is downright malicious!
Rani has acted her socks off in every film of her's apart from those she did with Govinda and perhaps to some extent with Bobby Deol. She is already aBollywood legend in the making no matter what the latest journalists write.
And just because a film does not do well at the box office, particularly when sites like Rediff and journalists like Raja Sen do their best to put people off from watching by their nasty reviews, does not make an actor's efforts any less! I am just as educated and intelligent as Raja Sen, Aseem Chabbra or a Rajeev Masand to assess that Rani was beyond reproach in DBH and KANK and other films. Like they themselves say : you don't have to know how to make films to know what you like! So why are their views more important. They abuse their access to the public!
Finally, why does a person need to belittle one actor's talent in order to praise another!

Even if Karan Johar's much-hyped Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna made its money, it did nothing for the actress in a soulless, conflicting part looking her dullest ever.

What followed next was a series of appearances depicting her wallow in sorrow or self-pity, thanks to tedious melodramas like Baabul, Ta Ra Rum Pum, Saawariya and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag bombing one by one at the box-office.
Famously fickle, the average viewers, a popular theory goes, had a hard time taking in this overdose of melancholy and rona dhona.

A Rani Mukerji starrer didn't spell excitement anymore. The audience diverted their attention to watch the light-hearted vibrancy of rising stars like Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone while others like Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra hit the treadmill to grab attention in bikini numbers.

Understandably, no one turned up to see Rani's lackluster Mary Poppins in yet another boring Yashraj caper, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic.
Adopting the adage, 'If you can't beat them. Join them,' the actress best known for her hard-hitting performances resolved to tone her baby fat to flaunt those toned curves in Dil Bole Hadippa's publicity promos.
Swapping her pile of saris and salwars for slinky dresses and gowns, Rani made a desperate bid to look 'with it' at the film's promotional events.
Interestingly, the film features her as a cricket-obsessed, Punjabi lass masquerading as a Sardar boy to get into the men's team. Too bad for the actress, neither shedding weight nor switching wardrobes or serenading Shahid Kapoor has helped her cause.

Alas, the audience prefers to watch a nonsensical Wanted over her disguised antics. If only the 31-year old would step out of her Yash Raj comfort zone and explore the possibilities of working with adventurous filmmakers and fresh mindsets, there might still be some hope. You think?

Rani tried to exit the Yash Raj comfort zone, and did NOKJ. Hopefully, Talaash will help her more in this same direction. She's a good actress, given a good role and good director, but the fact that she didn't try take more risks with her characters in addition to flopping at the box office with bad movies, not even critically acclaimed flops, affected negatively her star power, and transformed her into an almost has been actress. I must admit that Aishwarya has made better movie choices, with a few exceptions like Pink Panther or Action Replayy in the last 2-3 years, her movies -as her roles- were qualitatively superior and weren't quite what you could call run-of-the-mill Bollywood commercial flicks.

you're right, Rani's acting and the type of role she portrayed in Black are widely considered challenging and breakthrough for Bollywood's standards, and Aishwarya - or any other actress, for that matter- didn't play anything similar yet, but overall the quality of her body of work is more versatile and better than Rani's. It's probably a win-win situation. I wouldn't exactly call Aishwarya overrated as an actress either, because she gets a lot of flack for her acting and whatnot (especially after Umrao Jaan), but even her flop movies are popular or at least appreciated by critics. Rani is not called out quite that much because she's not that famous and has Black like the ultimate proof of her acting capabilities, even if that was like 6 years ago, and since then she gave a string of poor and forgettable performances until last year. I would call her overrated instead, as she got awards for Saawariya and NOKJ, even though she wasn't exactly impressive in either of them. In fact, in my humble opinion, Juhi deserved more the best supporting actress for I Am, but I can appreciate that Rani tried something new with herself. What I don't understand is why Rani fans are preoccupied so much with Aishwarya and her fans everywhere on pv. Can't we just learn to respect each other's difference of opinions, folks?

Rani has more WORSE movies then Ash. Why do you forget her duds? : For her 3-4 decent performances (Yuva, Black, NOKJ, Hum Tum), she has a long list (16-17) of forgettable movies , eg : Badal, bichoo, mehdi, hello brother, had kar de aapne, kahin pyaar na ho jaye, chori chori chupke chupke, pyaar dewaan hota hai, chori chori, bus itna sa khwab hai, calcutta mail, mangal pandey, babul, paheli, Lcmd, dbh, chalo ishq ladaye

Surprised that you haven't even heard of many of these movies? Because they, and Rani in them were so bad/horrible that no-body dares to remember them. Atleast we Ash fans DO REMEMBER ALL OF ASH'S movies, She was bad in Albela, Hum kise se kum nahin, Dhai Akshar Prem ke, but apart from these 3-4 duds, she has given decent performances in all her career spanning 40 movies

Only Aishwarya fans will again think Rani's performance in Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna was boring and overrated....it was such a tough character to play only through subtle nuances and express only through eyes....I can give 10 quotations were the critics have heavily praised her acting in KANK....Even a Gulzar , a Shabana Azmi or a Shyam Benegal talks so highly about Rani....but not Ash.....tel me one thing Ash fans....you talk about Ash's performance..will Ash's any so called best performance even measure upto Rani best that is Black....The Answer is a No....even you guys know it...Let Ash deliver something as hard hitting as Black n then may be we will talk....

@abir-itis, get real, please. Why don't you mention the overacting of Rani from Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Dil Bole Hadippa, Ta Ra Rum Pum? Or the same weepy histrionics from Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Saawariya or other 20 Rani movies? Rani, as Aishwarya, gave her best performances with directors like Bhansali and Mani Ratnam: Black and Yuva, as you said - Aishwarya gave HDDCS, Devdas, Guzaarish and Iruvar, Guru with the same directors- Rani even overacted in No One Killed Jessica as well, with Vidya overshadowing her like nobody's business. When it comes to realistic, into the character, fluid acting, then Vidya it's the best. Manisha, Tabu, Konkona are excellent, too.
