Elie Saab Oscar Worthy Gowns

Elie Saab conjures magic for the ladies who walk the Red Carpet with the Oscar, Grammys, or Golden Globe dreams in mind. He is the Houdini of the fashion world. His hallmark is the jewel tones he chooses to structure a perfectly form fitted couture gown. This Lebanon born master designer got deservedly noticed when in 2002 Halle Berry adorned his strategically embroidered bodice wine gown on her Best Actress Oscar winning night. That gown still figures in my list of Best 5 Oscar gowns of all time. For his Fall 07 couture collection, he has thoughtfully chosen grays, silver, and black with embellishments in pearls, sequins, and Swarovski stones. I would love to see some of these Elie Saab gowns worn this year for the awards. Here are my picks:

Great post Maria. I think

Great post Maria. I think my comment is going to be rather long, but I'm tempted to express my fashion views... so, brace yourself. :)

Well a classic sari is just that, classic, elegant, flowy, timeless. But I think it would be a nice change to see some Bollywood actresses adorn these couture dresses to the award shows in the coming year.

Aishwarya Rai: Second row from top, gray beaded dress with the stepped tulle layers on the left. I need Ash to step away from her boring cream sari disaster from this year’s awards show. That was only a few weeks after her wedding to Abhi was announced and I had expected to see her in something really colorful. This dress, although not colorful, still makes a huge statement. The oversized jacket is a bit distracting from the dress. I’m not sure if I like the super loose sleeves on it. But the dress scores big with me.
Preity Zinta: She can carry western wear like no other. But I’m not sure anything on this list will suit her style.
Rani Mukherjee: Rani always looks really great in saris, very elegant and put together. But I would love to see her break out and step into a gown one day and see how she will carry herself. I don’t think any dress on this list will compliment her short frame, but I would love to see her rock the red carpet in a full or cocktail length dress some day.
Lara Dutta: Last row, silver gray dress to the left. Lara is no doubt tall and has a long pair of legs. I think she’s got the confidence to wear the mile long slit that this dress has. And the asymmetrical shoulder brings the eye to the top of the dress.
Shilpa Shetty: Third row from the bottom, pleated metallic gray dress on the left. Shilpa has been wearing a lot of form fitting dresses of late. I would like to see in this not-so-tight number. It dress has a nice plunging neckline for those who the “sexy” and still leaves a lot to the mystery. The pleats create volumes of visual interest.
Kareena Kapoor: Third row down, flower strap dress to the left.
Bipasha Basu: First row, dress to the right. I think Bips would look great in a cocktail length version of this dress minus the scarf. I love the style of this dress and the detail at the bodice.
Katrina Kaif: Third row down, white hued dress to the right.
Kangana Ranaut: Last row, black and gray neck strap dress to the right … OR … fourth row down, black ruffle layered dress to the right.
Malaika Arora: Second row from the bottom, satin asymmetrical gown to the right.
Suzanne Khan: Second row from the bottom, chiffon flowy dress to the left. I know, she’s not an actress but she’s got that something… you want to see more of her. I think she’ll be able to pull off this vintage dress very nicely.
