Hi Nirupama,
Just a few basics for you. Always start with a clean canvas, that is, a clean face and do apply moisturiser well beforehand. Make sure you have the right shade of foundation otherwise no matter what else you apply, it won't look good. Foundation isnt a mask you wear, but a subtle tint to even out your own skintone. Dont ever try to lighten/darken your actual colour. Even if you cant tell, someone else will be able to.
Try mattifying foundations with oil free formulas to keep you from going greasy. Your best bet is mineral foundation like L'oreal Bare Naturale and Bare Escentuals.
That said, always use mascara to open up your eyes. If you're not confident about lipstick just yet, stick with glosses or lipstains which are easier to wear. Try Clarins Colour Quench and L'oreal's Just Bitten range.
A little blush on the apples of your cheeks (to find them just smile, they are the ones that are under your eyes). Apply a small amount of everything. It is a lot easier to add to it than to take away.
Most importantly, remember to take off your make up at the end of the day. ideally, you shouldnt wear it more than 8 hours. With your oily skin, leaving it on overnight could mean a breakout.
Once you gain more confidence, experiment with soft eye shadows like baby blue, browns and pinks. Stick with powder varieties instead of cream ones for your skin type. MAC ones are great, but for a beginner, it is a good idea to use a colour coordinated palette. Revlon does amazing ones in three or four complementary colours which takes the guesswork out of which ones to use. The best thing about Indian skin is that all colours look great on it. So dont be shy, try something different.
Just dont ever apply too much make up. Work either your eyes or your lips when creating a look. Remember to consider your outfit and time of day. Also, the kind of light you will be in. Smokey eyes look wonderful at 2 am in a nightclub. But can be garish under bright halogens.
All the best and remember, make up is meant to highlight your best features. Go work it!
