Did Mahesh Bhatt announce his retirement as a film director? Here’s what we know

For decades, Mahesh Bhatt has been one of Indian cinema's most vocal, unfiltered creative forces. But in a candid interview with the Hindustan Times, the 77-year-old veteran filmmaker formally announced his retirement from directing feature films. Read on!
Did Mahesh Bhatt announce retirement from filmmaking?
Mahesh Bhatt has spent the better part of the last 25 years focusing on production. His brief directorial return in 2020 for Sadak 2 made many believe that he could return to the director’s chair. But Bhatt has now firmly shut that door, confirming the rumors recently sparked by Vikram Bhatt.
When directly asked if he planned to direct again, he replied with a straight “No”, adding, “It is so gratifying to talk about movies so passionately.”
In his philosophical tone, the veteran director and producer told the above-mentioned publication, “Where there is life, there is vitality.” The Duplicate helmer added, “There is caution where things are dictated to you. And then, when you are to make content according to certain designs which have been pre-decided, then what is the role of an artiste?”
He further lamented that the algorithms that are pushing filmmakers to the platforms that want only numbers are compelling them to cut themselves to fit predetermined boxes. But showing hope, she expressed, “There will always be somebody outside, an audacious person who will become the new Pied Piper.”
During the interview, he highly praised director Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga, calling it a crucial turning point.
“I feel that this is a moment of rebellion,” Alia Bhatt's father stated. “When you put your heart into it and listen to the heartbeat of the times, you see a longing, a thirst in people for something sensitive and painful that connects to their lives. No matter how dark the night is, there will be renegades, there will be rebels who will come and rewrite the narrative,” he added.
While he will never direct another feature film, Bhatt continues to actively produce and write. He recently announced his role as a presenter for Naam, which serves as a spiritual sequel to his iconic 1986 action-drama Naam.
