Kunal Kemmu says Bollywood groupism existed as ‘few families’ controlled filmmaking: ‘Camps hote the...’

Actor-director Kunal Kemmu recently added his perspective to the debate surrounding camps, favoritism, and groupism in Bollywood. Speaking ahead of his debut as a reality show host for Alliance, he reflected on the alliances formed on reality television and the unspoken groups in Bollywood. Read on!
Kunal Kemmu on groupism in Bollywood
In an interview with Hindustan Times, the host of the TV show Alliance, Kunal Kemmu, shared his two cents on camps in B-town. When asked about the existence of inner circles and camps within the Hindi film industry, the Madgaon Express helmer admitted that Bollywood used to be dominated by a handful of influential groups.
He observed, “Camps hote the, ab thode kam hain because tab kuch hi families thi jo films bana rahi thi (There used to be camps. Now there are fewer because earlier only a few families made films). The corporates came.”
While Golmaal Again actor was quick to admit that camps exist, he clarified that it’s not the only way things happen. However, it does happen in any field.
Kemmu further opined, “You may feel good or bad about it, but the fact is that it will remain. It is human nature. If I like someone and I want to work with them, you can't make me not work with them. It might be disadvantageous for somebody else, but unfortunately, that's the way to go.”
Having said that, he quipped that even today, “business is not always decided by talent. It is decided by some math, which does not make any sense. That is why we started making projects and not films.”
He also mentioned that now people are not going to watch films. They are telling filmmakers they need content, not projects.
While talking about his upcoming television show, the host stated that it’s not different from what people experience in real life. According to him, there is a family we’re born into, and there is a family we make or choose.
“And sometimes family relationships don't last. Human existence is based on alliances. Back in the day, if you could not be a hunter or gatherer, you had to make alliances to survive. Alliances are what you need to survive,” he expressed.
On the work front, Kunal Kemmu will be next seen in Golmaal 5.
