'Shah Rukh Khan loved my script but...,' Ahmed Khan on why his debut film with Bollywood star never happened
Shah Rukh Khan was launching Ahmed Khan and Farah Khan as directors. However, his commitment to Farah's movie proved detrimental for Ahmed's debut film.
Shah Rukh Khan is a superstar every director wants to work with. Hence, when acclaimed choreographer Ahmed Khan decided to make his directorial debut with the 2004 film Lakeer – Forbidden Lines, he wanted to join hands with Shah Rukh Khan as the producer and lead actor. But that didn’t happen, and Farah Khan does have a part to play in it. Read on!
Ahmed Khan on why his film with Shah Rukh Khan was shelved
In a recent interview, choreographer-director Ahmed Khan opened up about the shelved project, which was his first step into filmmaking. The Welcome To The Jungle helmer revealed that despite having the script ready and having music maestro A R Rahman on board, the movie never materialized due to Shah Rukh Khan's absolute loyalty and commitment to Farah Khan.
Apparently, Ahmed was set to be the second choreographer, right after Farah, to be launched as a director by Shah Rukh Khan. According to Ahmed, despite the script and music being in place, the film titled Sabr was ultimately put on the back burner. “Shah Rukh heard my script, and he loved it. It was a serious film,” he shared.
Ahmed Khan candidly shared with News18 that the decision came down to Shah Rukh Khan's long-standing promise to his close friend, Farah Khan. “When I told Shah Rukh about it, he said he would want to do the film. I was in a haste to make it. Shah Rukh's commitment was with Farah,” Ahmed revealed.
At that time, Farah was working on her own script, which eventually became the blockbuster Main Hoon Na. Honoring his personal and professional allegiance to Farah, Shah Rukh Khan pivoted his full attention and dates toward her film.
But rather than causing any friction or having bad blood, Ahmed respected his decision. The Baaghi 3 filmmaker ultimately stepped away from the project to pursue other avenues, eventually making his debut with Lakeer.
Meanwhile, Farah Khan’s Main Hoon Na (2004) went on to become a massive box office hit and solidified one of Bollywood's most iconic actor-director partnerships.
Even though Ahmed’s dream to work with SRK never became a reality, the incident never impacted their equation. “That film never got made. It was only meant for Shah Rukh. But I know it’s never too late,” Ahmed opined.
