Long before establishing himself as Bollywood's go-to horror director, filmmaker Vikram Bhatt was grabbing headlines in the mid-1990s for his relationship with former Miss Universe, Sushmita Sen. Vikram Bhatt on dating Sushmita Sen when he was broke
In a candid interview with Siddharth Kannan, Vikram Bhatt took a trip down memory lane and spoke about the immense financial crunch he faced while directing superstars and dating one of the most beautiful women in the world.
The Raaz helmer shared, “I was a struggling director. Mere paas zeh*r khane ke paise nahi the (I did not have money to consume pois*n). I was directing Aamir Khan and dating Miss Universe, so to say, but I had no money. I was broke. I remember I didn't even have the money to buy a CD. I've lived life like a fakira (ascetic).”
Bhatt and Sushmita Sen grew close on the sets of the 1996 psychological thriller Dastak, which marked Sushmita's Bollywood debut. At the time, Vikram was assisting his mentor, Mahesh Bhatt, on the project.
While dating her, Vikram was working on the 1998 hit action film Ghulam starring Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji. Despite winning in his personal and professional life, his actual bank balance remained nonexistent.
Vikram's comment on his broke days comes at a time when businessman Lalit Modi defended the Aarya star after she was labeled a gold-digger. Modi stated that Sushmita was fiercely independent and would frequently take care of the bills and expenses whenever they went out.
Modi said, “She would never accept anything from anybody. So, when people called her a gold digger, that was completely wrong.”
On the work front, Vikram’s film, Haunted 3D: Ghosts of the Past, is all set to hit cinemas on June 12, 2026. The horror movie stars Mithun Chakraborty’s son Mahaakshay Chakraborty, along with Chetna Pande, Hemant Pandey, and Shruti Prakash.
