A sparkling show at Headingley on Thursday helped West Indies end the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 journey on a high note. The Men in Maroon cruised past Afghanistan by 23 runs to register their second win of the tournament. Afghanistan, however, ended up without a win as they lost all nine matches. They though put on a very good fight especially in last some matches. Despite being a fresh side, the Afghan side gave some top teams like India and Pakistan some real challenge.

Meanwhile, earlier, batting first, West Indies lost Chris Gayle early, however, Evin Lewis finally showed some form. The left-handed batsman scored an important half-century to set the platform for Windies. Shai Hope who has been the backbone of their batting line-up also played a superb knock of 77 runs in between. Lately, in-form, Nicholas Pooran scored fiery 58 runs while Jason Holder also chipped in with 45 runs cameo to help West Indies post a big total of 311 runs.

Chasing the target, Afghanistan lost captain Gulbadin Naib in the second over of innings. However, Rahmat Shah and young Ikram Ali Khil came to the rescue. Rahmat departed after scoring 62 runs while the Afghan stumper played a scintillating 86-run knock.

The Windies bowlers later made a comeback, taking some quick wickets to disrupt the Afghanistan rhythm. Kemar Roach scalped three wickets and Carlos Brathwaite finished with a four-wicket-haul to hand West Indies 23 runs win.
