Alpha put up a respectable opening at the Indian box office, collecting Rs. 8.75-9 crore nett approx on its first day. While the number is not good enough for the film's costs, it is comfortably ahead of pre-release expectations and has come despite the mixed-to-negative reception it has received post-release.

The film has done well overseas too, with USD 650K (Rs. 6.25 crore) approx opening day, which is better than all recent films, which did better in India. Here, the reception has probably stunted the final number, as from the pre-sales it had, it could have reached USD 750K or so.

Coming to the pre-release expectations being low, as the film faced an uphill battle from the outset. Historically, female-led action films have struggled to attract audiences at the Indian box office, making this a risky proposition to begin with. The challenge was further compounded by the YRF Spy Universe being at a low ebb following the underperformance of Tiger 3 and, more significantly, War 2. The teaser and trailer were competent enough to generate interest, but they ultimately got lost amid the overwhelming negativity surrounding the franchise.

Viewed in that context, the opening is actually a positive, indicating that the film managed to generate a fair amount of initial audience interest despite everything working against it. Under different circumstances, particularly if War 2 had been well received and restored confidence in the franchise, Alpha could have opened to numbers that would have been much healthier relative to its costs.

Even now, had the reception been positive, the film could have hoped for a run of sorts from here. However, at this point, the negative noise is likely to drown out whatever limited positivity exists, making it extremely difficult for the film to recover from here.
