Bollywood 2026 Half Year Box Office Report: Dhurandhar: The Revenge leads to a record year, Akshay Kumar delivers twice

The Hindi film industry had a decent to good first half of the year at the Indian box office in 2026. In fact, in nominal terms, the cumulative nett numbers are the highest ever, with the releases so far netting Rs. 2075 crore approx. The holdovers like Welcome to the Jungle, Main Vaapas Aaunga and Cocktail 2 will likely take this number over Rs. 2200 crore nett. The corresponding figure for the first half of 2025 stood at just under Rs. 1,800 crore nett.
The record-breaking performance was driven primarily by Dhurandhar: The Revenge, which contributed nearly half of the industry's total collections. Directed by Aditya Dhar and headlined by Ranveer Singh, the sequel emerged as an ALL-TIME BLOCKBUSTER and the highest-grossing Hindi film ever in India.
Other than that, the industry gave two HIT films, Border 2 and Bhooth Bangla. Welcome to the Jungle is likely to join as the third, and there is an outside chance of Main Vaapas Aaunga getting there, depending on how its late legs go. The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond and Mardaani 3 also emerged as SUCCESSes. Krishnavtaram: Part One performed well at the box office, but its high production cost kept it from making the classification list below.
The notable MISSes of the first half of 2026 include Ikkis, O Romeo, Ek Din, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, Chand Mera Dil, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai and Cocktail 2. Among these, Cocktail 2 had an opening but couldn’t sustain, while Pati Patni Aur Woh Do had a decent run, but the start was too low.
Another encouraging trend in 2026 has been the improved flow of releases. Compared to the post-pandemic years, when the release calendar frequently had prolonged dry spells, the first half of this year offered a far more consistent slate. There were still occasional gaps, but nowhere near the extent seen over the past few years.
Looking ahead, the second half of the year starts with two big films back to back, Alpha and Dhamaal 4, the latter having good expectations. Independence Day weekend will see two major releases, Awarapan 2 and Batwara 1947, the former buzzing HOT. Then in September there will be Mirzapur: The Movie and Haiwan, while Drishyam 3 is slated for Gandhi Jayanti. The year will conclude with two of the biggest releases on the calendar, Ramayana: Part One, arguably the biggest film of the year, and Shah Rukh Khan's King. Salman Khan's Matrubhumi also remains on the release slate, though it was originally expected to arrive in the first half before getting delayed due to pending approvals.
