Carry on Jatta 4 collected Rs. 4 crore (Rs. 3.35 crore nett) approx at the Indian box office on Sunday, closing its opening weekend at Rs. 9.50 crore (Rs. 8 crore nett) approx. The overseas numbers are expected to be around USD 0.90-1 million, with grosses from Pakistan awaited, giving it Rs. 18-19 crore weekend worldwide.

The Gippy Grewal starrer fourquel had a good opening on Friday, although well below the franchise standards, which include three BUMPER openers and ATBBs in the long run. Having said that, the trend over the weekend was good, with the film catching up with Carry on Jatta 2 in daily collections on Sunday, while starting 20-25 per cent short on Friday. That doesn’t mean the trend is stronger than CoJ2; it's just that this film had more space to grow. Carry on Jatta 2 held extraordinarily well on weekdays thanks to huge spillover, which is unlikely to happen here.

Sequels, in general, seem to be falling out of fashion, or at least are no longer the surefire bets they appeared to be just a couple of years ago. Recent ones like Bambukat 2, Nikka Zaildar 4, Godday Godday Chaa 2 and others underperformed badly, while even Saunkan Saunkanay 2 could not quite live up to expectations. In that context, Carry on Jatta 4 has fared better.

How it holds on Monday will determine its full run prospects. It will not be able to reach the highs of Carry on Jatta 4 and probably even Carry on Jatta 3, but something like Rs. 30 crore would be a good result, especially considering the current state of the Punjabi film industry, which has been desperately short of HITs.
