Karuppu Box Office Collections: Suriya starrer scores Rs. 18 Cr first day in India, Poised to be a HIT

Tamil film Karuppu recorded a very good first day at the Indian box office. The Suriya starrer collected Rs. 18 crore approx on Friday, including Rs. 11.25 crore approx from Tamil Nadu. There was a Telugu-dubbed version, which also put decent numbers.
The film had a low opening in the morning shows, but collections improved with every passing show. By the evening and night shows, the film was recording excellent occupancies, with several centres running housefull. In the morning, it seemed like the film would just about reach around Rs. 6 crore on its first day in Tamil Nadu, but the final number was close to double. Some of this is down to the uncertainty about the film’s release in the morning, with awareness increasing over the day, and so did the collection. More importantly, the initial word of mouth appears to be positive, helping the film gain momentum as the day progressed.
Looking ahead, the film has strong pre-sales for Saturday. Since it received last-minute clearance from the financial issues it was facing, the release yesterday happened with virtually no pre-sales, making direct comparisons difficult. Still, looking at the advances in general, the film is expected to see a jump in collections today, though the extent of that growth will become clearer later in the day.
Suriya has endured a prolonged rough patch at the box office, with his last outright theatrical success coming over a decade ago in 2013. In the years since, some of his films opened promisingly but failed to sustain due to poor reception, while others that found audience appreciation could not generate a strong initial start. For the first time in a long while, things appear to be falling into place together. This finally looks like the long-awaited hit that had eluded the superstar for years.
