First day box office forecast: Rs. 16-20 crore

Christopher Nolan is one of the biggest director brands in India. His popularity has only grown with time, reaching new heights with his previous film Oppenheimer, which opened to Rs. 14.50 crore nett and went on to collect Rs. 129 crore nett in India in 2023. What makes that even more impressive is that Oppenheimer was a dialogue-heavy biographical drama, the kind of film that traditionally does not command huge box office numbers, especially in the initial phase.

In contrast, The Odyssey is an epic fantasy action film, which has far higher initial value. Hollywood has enjoyed a solid year so far, delivering several successful releases, including a couple of surprise hits. Given Nolan's growing brand value, the genre advantage and the strong momentum for Hollywood films, The Odyssey is expected to record the biggest opening of Nolan's career in India, with a realistic chance of touching the Rs. 20 crore nett.

Other Updates

Welcome to the Jungle releases this week. The film has opted for previews on Thursday evening starting from 7 PM, which will naturally be taking away from its true first day on Friday. Furthermore, the film hasn’t gathered the buzz as one would have expected, especially with the big IP involved. One possible reason could be that the film appears to be leaning more towards spoof comedy, whereas the first two instalments were broader family entertainers.

Taking these factors into account, the opening-day forecast has been revised down to Rs. 13-17 crore nett. The previews are expected to bring in another Rs. 4-6 crore. All inclusive, the film is forecasted to collect Rs. 17-23 crore nett on its opening day.
