Star Wars The Mandalorian and Grogu India Box Office: Pedro Pascal's sci-fi film takes dull Rs 1 crore opening in India
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu kicked off its box office run in India on a low note. The Pedro Pascal starrer needs to show better trends ahead.
The latest Hollywood sci-fi film, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, began its box office run in India on a dull note. The Pedro Pascal starrer collected Rs. 1 crore gross on its opening day at the Indian box office. That's a low start, considering the unavailability of any significant Indian release this weekend, especially in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
Star Wars is not very popular in India, which could be a major reason the movie struggled for an opening on Day 1. Barring Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which did somewhat decent business in 2015, none of the films have managed even that. It had a huge market and popularity in the West earlier, but it has passed its prime.
Directed and co-written by Jon Favreau, the Pedro Pascal starrer should aim for good growth over the weekend at the Indian box office to continue the glorious run of Hollywood releases this year. For the unversed, several Hollywood films have not only impressed audiences this year but also surprised trade circles with their theatrical runs in India. Project Hail Mary, Lee Cronin's The Mummy, Michael, and The Devil Weds Prada 2 have performed well at the Indian box office, emerging as back-to-back successes.
Pedro's previous sci-fi release, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, had a relatively far better opening in India, but that's due to Marvel's branding. It will be interesting to see how The Mandalorian & Grogu perform over the weekend and whether it can stick to cinemas for a long run.
