Welcome to the Jungle Box Office Collections: Akshay Kumar starrer grows well on Saturday netting Rs. 20 Cr in India

Welcome to the Jungle collected Rs. 20 crore nett approx on Saturday at the Indian box office. This marks a 30 per cent growth from Friday, although since Friday had some holiday support, the real value growth is probably around 50-60 per cent. The further good sign is that advances for Sunday are up considerably from Saturday, so there is going to be a big surge today as well, which is what is expected from a mass comedy entertainer.
The running total after two days in release stands at Rs. 39 crore nett approx. The first weekend shall be somewhere around Rs. 63-64 crore nett, which is a decent sum but, more importantly, will come with a strong trend. This also means the film is likely going to be a success. It could go on to be a HIT as well, but for that, it needs to run for a couple of weeks, as Bhooth Bangla did. For that film, competition was a lot more relaxed, while here the film will be facing direct competition from Dhamaal 4 in the third week.
Now there is another pov to look at things. Welcome is a huge brand, and these numbers are not up to the expectations one would associate with the brand, which is, well, right. However, it seemed like the film didn't make full use of that brand value in the promotional material. The treatment of comedy is more of a parody/spoof as compared to the previous two films, which were family entertainers mounted on a large scale. This naturally limits its appeal. The absence of two core characters of the franchise, Uday and Majnu, has also not helped. These factors have neutralised the brand value benefit to some extent.
This is not to say that there is no brand value; without it, the film would have been worse off, just that expectations need to be tempered slightly. If the film can sustain this start, it will be a win.
