Welcome to the Jungle collected Rs. 4.25 crore nett approx on its 2nd Friday. This marks an over 70 percent drop from Friday last week, which is a so-so drop. It dropped 20 percent from the previous day, which is something it could have avoided, as staying flat would have been much better. The eight-day running total stands at around Rs. 97 crore nett, with the film set to cross the Rs. 100 crore nett mark today.
The Akshay Kumar film seemed poised to be a HIT film till Tuesday, but the last three days have seen a bit of a drop, which it needed to avoid. It is still not ruled out, but it is certainly going to be cutting close. In hindsight, the Monday hold was probably helped by ongoing Summer breaks in North Indian schools, with some of them going back in session from Wednesday. Now, I haven’t noticed that summer breaks make much of an impact on daily collections in India; it does A LOT across the world, but maybe there is something to look into there. The trend is more in line with Housefull 5 than Bhooth Bangla, which also released in June and had good Monday & Tuesday but dropped after that.
Welcome should showcase big growth over the weekend. The negative reception to Alpha should also help, as it should gain back some of the lost showcasing. It needs to avoid dropping significantly on weekdays and then sustain well in the third week. If it does that, after that it will be quite straightforward; otherwise, it could be difficult. What is also working in the film’s favour is that despite being a big franchise film, the costs involved are very reasonable. Had it been as costly as Housefull 5, it would have been tough for it.
