WARNING: Spoilers Ahead:

South Korean film The Call released on Netflix today. The international film sees Park Shin Hye and Jun Jong Seo lead the movie. The Lee Chung Hyeon directorial follows the journey of two women, Seo Yeon and Young Sook who are living in different years of the same reality. The women cross paths via a cordless phone. The film puts Seo Yeon's lonely life in the spotlight while viewers play witness to Young Sook's traumatic house arrested life courtesy a Shaman step-mother.

As the movie unfolds, Young Sook undoes the accident that led to the death of Seo Yeon's father. In return, Seo Yeon warns Young Sook of her death by the hands of her mother. When both these past events are undone, hell breaks loose as Young Sook tastes blood and results in becoming a mass murdered. When she learns that she is imprisoned for life after killing two people, she blackmails Seo Yeon into digging out the events that lead to her arrest. When Seo Yeon refuses, she kills her father in the past and kidnaps Seo Yeon's younger version. The climax watches Seo Yeon from the future working with her mother in the past and killing Young Sook, or so we are made to believe.

The last scene of The Call sees Seo Yeon standing mourning her mother's death. However, as she breaks down watching the tombstone, she is visited by her mother, leaving viewers perplexed about the scene. While Seo Yeon walks out of the graveyard happily, it is assumed that Seo Yeon's mother survived the fall. It is possible Seo Yeon managed to save the mother and ended up in the present day to experience that moment with her mother. However, the mid-credit scene breaks open two possibilities.

The mid-credits scene sees Young Sook from the future contacting her past self and warning about the events unfolding. As she explains, she urges Young Sook to hold on to the phone regardless of the final outcome. As we watch Young Sook laying in the pool of her own blood, presumably dead, she opens her eyes to hint at her survival.

The first possibility, in this case, is that Seo Yeon and her mother did manage to make an escape, hence landing up in the present day scenario. The alter possibility is that while Seo Yeon managed to reset the past for a better present, Young Sook from the past hunts Seo Yeon's mother and kills her. That could explain the sudden vanishing of the mother in the scene and Seo Yeon landing up in the attic of the murder house.

What do you think the ending meant? Let us know in the comments below.

if the past young sook does not die in the fall, how did the present youngsook disappear while killing soyeon

Anonymous 1 month ago

i dont think she did. she probably left to find the warn 90s young sook as we see in the mid credits scene

Anonymous 4 months ago

they gave the happy ending then cancelled it and gave the bad ending just for a last minute twist. Not worth it.

omg this movie rocks

Anonymous 5 months ago

The ending is that Seo Yeon ( Park Shin Hye ) will be alive but she would be captured in the attic of the murder house by Young Sook ( Jeon Jong Seo ) for rest of her life and her mother would die at that house when they both ( Young Sook and Seo Yeon's mother) were lying on the floor her mother would die at the spot while falling down while Young Sook would be alive and she would capture Seo Yeon at that time so that she couldn't run away from that house and tell to the police or give any testimony this the real ending.

Anonymous 5 months ago

The ending is flawed... The only way Young Sook would be able to tell her past self what would happen that day, she needs to have been aware of it, which means she had already survived it. If she survived it without the phone call, then that phone call is void since she would survive it either way. If she survives it that day from the phone call from the future, then it creates a time loop which means the future with Seo Yeon mum being alive should not have existed. If Young Sook died that day, she would not be able to tell her past self since she would cease to exist in the future which was shown was the case in the movie. Once she died in the past, the reality of her telling the past self anything is negated. The other side is if Seo Yeon’s mother did survive, the mother would have gone to the police. Even if this wasn’t the case and the mother got killed straight after, the police would have investigated the home as she was clearly a suspect and after the mother and police officer go to the same house they suspected and then disappear, its a big red flag. For her to survive till the future without being caught by police to then be able to tell her past what would happen which she already doesn't exist in doesn't make sense. You can change the future but not the past.

It was so exciting!!! But the ending though...I thought young seok died

Anonymous 5 months ago

I think after the second ending... Speculating theories is shot... The second ending doesn't make any sense.

Anonymous 5 months ago

Will watch it again. Thanks for the comments here, I totally missed some of your point.

Anonymous 5 months ago

I hope they make a second movie.

Anonymous 5 months ago

I think there are two endings in the story. The first one is when the mother died and the second one is when yeon sook died. The one who survived got those scars that’s why it showed that they have the same scars. If the mother was the one who survived, the last scene would be the one where they were walking together in the cemetery. But if it’s young sook who survived, the last scene would be where Seo Yeon was tied in a chair, held captive by Young Seok for years to make her experience the same thing she experienced from her step mother thus telling Seo Yeon that they are the same. The only way to change the second ending is if Seo Yoon breaks loose, finds the phone and talks to someone from the past.

Anonymous 5 months ago

OMG!! Your intepretation makes much more sense than the one explained here. I mean, that there are actually two endings to the same story which will eventually (a second movie) change or could eventually change. One thing that still strucks me and seems odd is that the date of Seo Yeon' mom death and the date in which the final eventes happened are different. One on December 11th (Seo Yeon's mom death according to the grave) and the other one on December 31th (the day of the final events in the past). It could be that such grave is in fact of her father maybe? (I don't know Korean and the movie does not show translations).

Anonymous 5 months ago

They both dead END

Anonymous 5 months ago

What makes me confused is if past Young Sook wasn't dead (she survived the falling), she wouldn't disappear in the present when she was about to kill Seo Yeon?

Anonymous 5 months ago

point

Anonymous 5 months ago

thats why the fact it was two different scenarios is the only solution

Anonymous 5 months ago

The real question that no one has the answer to.

Anonymous 5 months ago

In my opinion, her mother is still alive shows us that there’s a possibility that both young Sook and her mom survived the fall. Her mom woke up first. That’s why we can see her at the cemetery. Later after that, young sook gain conscious and killed Seo Yeon's mom. That’s why suddenly her mom faded away. Because she’s dead and young seo yeon has become Young Sook’s hostile. That’s why the ending shows Seo Yeon tied in the house. Because young Seo Yeon never made out from that house. I just can’t figure out why Young Sook go out after hearing the clock sound. I’m pretty sure that has something to do with her survival.

Anonymous 5 months ago

I just wonder, if Young Sook from the pas hold Seo Yeon captive all this time, she couldn't become the Seo Yeon from the future who saved her from her mother in this different timeline, so eventually Young Sook would have been killed by her mother... So entangled and paradoxical

Anonymous 5 months ago

The question is why does seo yeons mom have the same and exact scar as Yong sook future have the future? The camera oans to the neck of the characters so there must be something about the scars both characters have. Im thinking are they the same person and seo yeon is just hallucinating?is she the one who has a mental illness?yong sook once said that they are both the same..

Anonymous 5 months ago

Worth noting that the initials of their initials are reverse of each other (YS versus SY), which also happens in the original Korean writing; this for me is another piece of evidence.

Anonymous 5 months ago

Despite the story and all, it would seem that in reality none of it has happened since seo yeon is actually suffering with the same disorder as young-sook, same fate of being "exorcised" (white clothes + shaman bell at the end). Also young-sook telling seo yeon that they are "much alike" gives a plus point to this theory. Hence, probably all that has happened was just a made-up story playing in seo yeon's mind (and the exorcism story really applies to her).

Anonymous 5 months ago

when young sook said she and seo yoon are the same because no matter what happen, they will both lost things,,

Anonymous 5 months ago

They are actually slightly different. But I believe the scars are a reference to the fight itself. The mom lives to tell the tale at the cemetery, and has scars to remind us viewers. In the scene where Young-Sook is talking on the phone (scars shown), she has ALSO lived from surviving the fight with the mom. In that reality, her mom is already dead.

Anonymous 5 months ago

Hey guys, I watched this movie last night, and I literally rewatched all the ending scenes to piece my theory together; and I feel like it covers all the loopholes that “supposedly” pop up. I believe that the end credits is merely a continuation of the ending (Seo Yeon walking down cemetary with her mother - her mother gets killed by past YS, and present changes for SY to be in the basement). When past YS calls future YS, future YS has all these scars on her, and she NEVER went to prison in this reality. Meaning she went through that night (cop and mom visiting) and survived. With that in mind, she told past YS to 'keep the phone with you even if thingd don't work out, it's the only way we can change things'. So in the scene that the mom uses the phone to call her husband, past YS is shocked to find that the mom spoke with Yeo Seon in the future! She thought what the hell, both past/future selves must keep phone with them. She freaks out knowing something has gone wrong and kills the cop. Past YS tells the mom to give her the phone, and she runs away with it. In the future, YS and Seo Yeon are fighting. Flash forward, the scene where YS is just about to slash Seo Yeon, YS disappears. We are led to believe that she died in the past by falling down with the mom. BUT, my theory is, YS actually falls unconscious in the past while mom wakes up from the fall, escapes with little Yeo Seon. The present now shows that Yeo Seon is reunited with her mom. Her mom survived the killin

Anonymous 5 months ago

Bro you’re actually right daYuM that’s big brain

Anonymous 5 months ago

It cut off, haha. Anyway, the mom survived the killing, and we see Seo Yeon and her mom walk peacefully away. It is during this time that past Young-Sook wakes, and we see that she is by herself. She probably woke up, realizes the mother and little Seo Yeon has escaped. Being her psychopathic self - and classic, invincible villain - she chases after both. As they are all injured, they are not far from the scene, and Young Sook successfully kills the mother (flickering mother image at cemetary), and Seo Yeon is also transported into the basement in this “new” change in the timeline. It also explains why she's suddenly horrified by the change of her surroundings.

Anonymous 5 months ago

Ok but no one is explain that YS in the present disappeared when she was about to kill SY becouse in the past SY mother threw YS from the balconyWhen YS she disappeared in the future it means that she died in the past and there was no time line for her ,this is a plot hole for me .

Anonymous 5 months ago

Young Sook in that present timeline is most likely in prison - mom and little Seo Yeon escaped and survived, and YS is arrested by police.

Anonymous 5 months ago

I think park shin hye has multiple personality disorder and she causes the harm to herself and the people around her, she is the victim and the murderer

Anonymous 5 months ago

The tombstone she saw was her dads! Remember in the beginning of the movie, the mom said she wanted to be buried by the dad. Seo yeon was crying in relief that the tombstone wasn’t there and that’s when the mom showed up. As they were walking down the cemetery, sook kills the mom in the past while they walk down, that’s why the mom flickers. Then the scene changes and that’s why seo yeon is waking up in the basement.

Anonymous 5 months ago

Can someone explain how is the last phone call is possible? When future Young-Sook warns her past right before the police officer and Seo Yeon’s mother came into the house.

Anonymous 5 months ago

If you look closely, the movie suggests that time flows in the past same as in the present. That phone call was done in the same timeline when seo yeon was hiding from young-sook, hence way before the final scene where her mother was able to push young-sook in the past. Hence, probably all that has happened was just a made-up story playing in seo yeon's mind.

Anonymous 5 months ago

The last phone call is possible because both the mother and yoong-sook survived the fall. The mother probably woke up first, and left the scene so the police would be led right to yoong-sook. Meanwhile Yoong-sook played dead and woke up once the mother left, heading towards the phone to warn her past self before she's about to be arrested for life. That's when the police barged in. Two endings occurred. One, Yoong-sook does the phone call and gets arrested for life. Just like she was supposed to be. Two, Yoong-sook who held on to the phone heard the warning and proceeded to kill the mother before the mother could bring the police. In exchange, two endings happened in present time, right in front of our eyes. One, Seo Yeon was crying tears of relief at her father's grave because her mother's grave wasn't there. Her mother arrives and they live happily together. Two, when Yoong-sook killed the mother, it altered the future AT THAT MOMENT. Almost immediately, Seo Yeon's mother's silhouette starts to fade. And Seo Yeon wakes up tied in the same way Yoong-sook was, an indication that Yoong-sook won and kept her in the basement. Perhaps, she got plastic surgery and was now posing as Seo Yeon's mother ever since Seo Yeon wad young. This would correspond to Yoong-sook saying 'You and I are more alike than you think' near the end of the movie.

Anonymous 5 months ago

yes! mind boggling! if she dies, then how can she warns her past self? i just cant figure it out

Anonymous 5 months ago

Aight so I'll share my theory too. I think the ending was an alternative one that could have happened but didnt since she didnt keep the phone with her. If you follow the present timeline yong sook was talking on the phone and she is saying ' listen you might get killed" (time stamp 1:23:30) but while she is on the call Seo yen also reads the notebook and goes back into the house where she sees yong sook on the phone making that call. So it was a matter of who had the phone. On present end Yong sook managed to snatch the phone and, in the past her mom managed to keep the phone (remember young sook is not so smart, she said the phone was dead and didn't wanna let her have the phone so at this time she has already been told to keep the phone with her). So her mom won. But the ending shows what could have happened if Yong sook won. Its an alternative ending.

Anonymous 5 months ago

There are two possible theories. The first and honestly most probable is that Seo-Yen suffered a breakdown. If details are correct she has been projecting her own guilt about her father on her mother. The other idea is that Young-Sook lived, killed her mother a day after they fell, and is keeping Seo-Yen prisoner in the secret room. This is not likely. In order for it to occur Young-Sook would have to somehow explain away what happened to her mother, the police officer, the strawberry farmer and the family also assuming she caught the mother before she contacted the police again. Sook has proven already in the movie to be terrible at coming up with believable stories. If she survived to keep Yen imprisoned, that would mean the police work was inexcusably horrid.

Anonymous 5 months ago

This is my point of view. I think she really got kindapped and tortured as a young girl and this leads her to a disorder growing up. It must be a PTSD because the last part of the movie showed she's wearing something white which is very similar to patients in the mentak ward. The phone call between the past and her present is all in her mind.

Anonymous 5 months ago

Fully agreed. The last scene shows her tied to a chair with shaman bells ringing. It was exactly what Young Sook went through in her life. Seo Yeon is the problematic one.

Anonymous 5 months ago

Young Sook even tells Seo Yeon, "you and I are much more alike than you think" towards the end

Anonymous 5 months ago

Ummm, I think you’re all wrong. I’m korean and just watched the movie. The ending scene is where Seo Yeon goes to the grave and it’s her dad’s mound, not her mother’s. Her mother survived the ordeal and lived to the present day (without brain cancer I’m pretty sure).

Anonymous 5 months ago

watch the credit after the name.

Anonymous 5 months ago

What I didn't understand (probably missed it because I can't read korean) is whose name is on the grave together with her father, if her mother was alive at that moment? And how did she not realize it wasn't her mother's name?

Anonymous 5 months ago

Exactly! And lol at it being in Chinese to save space. XD

Anonymous 5 months ago

Exactly! And lol at it being in Chinese to save space. XD

Anonymous 5 months ago

its not korean , i'm puzzled too, its manderin (chinese) everything that i know of korean culture is written in korean , but why is the tomb written in chinese ? save space ?

Anonymous 5 months ago

Let me explain both era in past n in present, time is flowing in same speed its shown when she try to blow her in green house, so while Seo yeon went to police station n graveyard in present time, in the past time her mother n Yong sook both were still alive but passed out after fallen from top hence Seo yeon in future still able to meet her mother, then in past when Young sook wakes up then we see seo's mother disappears that means young sook wakes up faster then her mom n now she kills her hence mother got disappers n she ended up in chair tight up!!!

Anonymous 5 months ago

That scene is a flashback, remember the scene when Seo Yeon ended up in the middle of freezers the present Young Sook use to store bodies, lots of freezers. There was a scene after that where she said "You might get killed", the last scene was shown to show that she was actually telling that to her past self (Young Sook)

Anonymous 5 months ago

How do you explain the last phone call from the current Young sook to the past time Young sook, where the mum and the police were about to enter the house? It doesn’t add up to the current time line.

Anonymous 5 months ago

When Seo Yeon's mom survived the fall, she lived with her up to the present (so we can see them reunites in the ending). Young Seok was alive as well. Present day, (but for the 2nd time to contact the past) Young Seok got the chance to talk to her past self in 1999 but this time around it's before Young Seok's mom and the police came looking for her and Seo Yeon's dad. So she warned herself, killed them both and (still like the first encounter as young Seo Yeon still held captured to that house) came back to the present where she was tied on the chair inside the house. Why didn't she go to jail if the mom survived? If she was captured and served a life sentence, then she wouldn't be able to talk and warn her past self to kill Seo Yeon's mom.and the police. Well, that's only what I can explain to myself. I enjoyed this. Like how I enjoyed Forgotten. Commendable! It's a very nice film!

Anonymous 5 months ago

I think what happened was, Young sook managed to survive and chased after the mom and Seo Yeon then killed the mom and kept Seo Yeon with her for 20 years, making her the step mom and Seo Yeon as the captured step daughter in white as Young Sook used to be.

Anonymous 5 months ago

I agree

Anonymous 5 months ago

I have a theory. You can see in the time line where Young Sook alive, Seo Yeon wears black. And in the time line where Young Sook died, Seo Yeon wears white. And in the last scene when Seo Yeon was tied she wears white. So the conclusion is, maybe Seo Yeon was fainted and she dreamed meeting her mother. But when she woke up, Young Sook is alive and proly will kill her. This is the most possible theory i guess.

Anonymous 5 months ago

How did Seo Yeon and Young Sook end up in the same timeline without Young Sook having been ages 20 yrs? I understand that she might have killed Seo Yeons mom and kept little Seo Yeon hostage but how come no one discovered the bodies and missing people for 20 yrs?

Anonymous 5 months ago

They did discover missing peoples but had no clue how and they did not find the bodies.

Anonymous 5 months ago

but how about the scenes were sook going to some places? how can she wander around if she's captured?

Anonymous 5 months ago

i think young sook keep all of it in the fridges

Anonymous 5 months ago

i think young sook keep all of it in the fridges

Anonymous 5 months ago

I think actually young sook is her present mom. Her mom got killed and young sook takes seon yeon mom’s place. The scene at the hospital is young sook recovering from plastic surgery

Anonymous 5 months ago

But Seo Yeon remembers well of young Sook killing her father, kidnapping her and burning her with boiling water. I don't think she will take young Sook as her mother.

Anonymous 5 months ago

But Young Sook killed her father and kidnapped Sao Yeon, Seo Yeon knows it, I don't think she will take Young Sook as her mother.

Anonymous 5 months ago

Which hospital scene?

Anonymous 5 months ago

Seo Yeon isn’t suffering from brain cancer it’s her mom. That’s why her mom has the bandage on her head and is in the hospital .

Anonymous 5 months ago

I’m really love Park Shin Hyde’s Drama and movies. I just can’t wait to watch this movie.

Anonymous 5 months ago

I think Young sook was alive and killed Seo Yeon's Mother and Captured the little Seo Yeon and kept her alive for 20years

Anonymous 5 months ago

I think you're right, this makes sense but I don't think so,if she kept her for 20 years, why is there a difference between how they communicate

Anonymous 5 months ago

But if she keeps her for 20 years how come they were able to communicate apart, aren't they suppose to be together???

Anonymous 5 months ago

I think you're right, this makes sense but I don't think so,if she kept her for 20 years, why is there a difference between how they communicate

Anonymous 5 months ago

Agree!

Anonymous 5 months ago

because in the present it didnt happen yet, thats my guess

Anonymous 5 months ago

Yes this is correct... at first seo yeon mom survive thats why seoyeon n her mom met at the graveyard... but maybe later when oldtime young sook awake... that time she already received call from future young sook about what going to happen...then she killed seo yeon mom... which makes seo yeon mom disappear and seo yeon was kidnapped and tortured till she grow up...

Anonymous 5 months ago

Possible. But I wonder how did she able to go to the station and graveyard if she was held as a hostage in that house

Anonymous 5 months ago

Yeah iam think so.

Anonymous 5 months ago

I just think that Seo Yeon is actually fantasizing she made contact with Young Sook since Seo Yeon is suffering from brain cancer, so all the scenes in the movie are not happened actually. By the way, this movie is great. Thumbs up!

Anonymous 5 months ago

I do believe it's Seo Yeon's mother who has the brain cancer so the movie is not a hallucination or dream sequence.

Anonymous 5 months ago

wasn’t she listening to the doctor talking about her mother’s brain damage? that’s why her mother was in the hospital

Anonymous 5 months ago

Seo Yeon’s mother is the one with brain cancer, the doctor tells her how far it’s gotten in the beginning because, it’s her mother :(

Anonymous 5 months ago

Her mother had cancer, not her

Anonymous 5 months ago

it’s not that seo yeon suffering from brain cancer, it’s her mother! that’s why her mother wear a beanie in a hospital

Anonymous 5 months ago

Isn't it the mother?

Anonymous 5 months ago

I think the one suffering Brain cancer is her mother

Anonymous 5 months ago

I think the mom is the one with cancer

Anonymous 5 months ago

Woahhhh i think so !she might be hallucinations since she were in bad condition of life like her mom was sick and her dad has passed away and everything she had currently is the bad luck .she's suffering alone and wanted a happiness so she made something up to lighting up her life.Sorry for my broken English !

Anonymous 5 months ago

THAT'S A GREAT THEORY FOR ITS ENDING! but i really hope that its a happy ending.

Anonymous 5 months ago

THAT ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE! There are some people speculating a second film too.

Anonymous 5 months ago

me too hopee it will be real

Anonymous 5 months ago

Exactly..I’m assuming there would be a second part of the film
