In talking about one of the major shows that helped bring the Hallyu wave to other countries, Goong, aka Princess Hours, will always have its name on the list. The palace drama is based on a manhwa that began in 2003 and went on to become a million-seller in Korea and Japan.

Goong was made into a drama first in 2006 starring Yoon Eun Hye, Joo Ji Hoon, Kim Jeong Hoon, and Song Ji Hyo, and days after its release, it became a blockbuster nation and global hit. Today, March 5, Jae Dam Media - who have the rights to the manhwa - announced that they have signed a contract to remake the drama with the company Group 8, which was responsible for the 2006 remake too.

In the announcement, Hwang Nam Yong, CEO of Jae Dam Media, stated that “It is necessary to continue making new works, but I think that maintaining the vitality of existing good works is also an important part of IP expansion.” The cast, filming, release dates - everything is still in discussion.

Goong’s story takes place in an alternate universe where the crown prince ends up in an arranged marriage with a commoner and the drama that follows the royal family after that. Group 8, the company that’s remaking the show the second time, has also made a commercially successful musical in Korea and Japan for the same, after the 2006 show. The company is also widely known for its dramas such as Boys over Flowers and My ID is Gangnam Beauty.
