Bollywood perfectionist, a pandora of talent and a box-office supremo, Aamir Khan has been reigning and how! The Mega cum superstar turns 53 today. While his contemporaries, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, became a slave of an onscreen image, Aamir never limited himself or his talent which made him the shining star in Bollywood. From Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Raja Hindustani, Rang De Basanti to Dangal, 3 Idiots and PK, Aamir has proved his versatility as an actor and producer in all his movies. He is not just a superstar in India but also a star in China where his movies Dangal and Secret Superstar have done a bombastic business.
His career graph has been a steady one. Even though his movies like Andaz Apna Apna or Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar did not perform as per his expectations at the box office then, it went on to attain cult status. Dil Chahta Hai and Lagaan almost changed the way youth looked at Indian cinema. Aamir has been bestowed with a Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan for his exemplary work in the field of cinema. In addition to this, Aamir is also a four-time National Award-winning actor.
With such a solid CV, it is almost difficult to imagine that the actor might have had a few slumps but believe it or not, Aamir too has witnessed a few setbacks. Here is a list of his few underrated films:
1. Akele Hum Akele Tum -
Starring Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala, Akele Hum Akele Tum is a 1995 Indian musical drama romance film. The movie was directed by Mansoor Khan and saw Aamir playing the character of an aspiring playback singer. The movie chronicles the life of two characters who get separated to fulfil their ambitions and their struggle for reconciliation. Aamir nailed the character of a distressed playback singer, however, the movie did not get its due.
2. 1947: Earth -
Directed by Deepa Mehta, 1947 Earth is a 1999 Indian period drama film. Earth saw Aamir Khan playing the character of an ice-candy man and is considered one of the best performances. He played a negative role in the film and the shades of his character left everyone astonished. Even after over a decade and a half, it is hard to imagine any other actor playing the character and bringing in the nuances to the character which Aamir did. Earth was also India's official entry for the 1999 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film but was not included among the final five nominees selected by the AMPAS.
However, not much about the movie is spoken about, much to everyone's dismay.
Aamir's second outing with Manisha Koirala, Mann is a 1999 romantic drama film, directed by Indra Kumar. The movie did an average business at the box office but Aamir's role as a casanova-turned-ambitious painter is underrated. The movie was high on emotional value but couldn't garner the eyeballs it intended to.
4. Dhobi Ghat:
Dhobi Ghat is a 2011 film directed by Kiran Rao starring Aamir Khan, Prateik Babbar and others. The movie received a lot of critical acclamation but failed to get numbers at the box office. It was also longlisted for the 65th BAFTA Awards in the Best Film Not in the English Language category.
However, when we speak of Aamir's noteworthy performances, his subdued performance as a reclusive artist was underrated.
Directed by Reema Kagti, Talaash is a psychological horror film co-written and directed by Reema Kagti. Aamir played the role of an Inspector Surjan Singh Shekhawat in the film also starring Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor Khan. However, the film couldn't perform as per expectations at the box office.
Despite having an ensemble cast, the movie failed to impress many making it to the underrated movies list.
