On August 15, 1947, India declared itself free from the oppression of the British East India Company and after centuries of struggle, Indians breathed in the air of freedom. 73 years later, India is growing at a pace at par with other nations. Over the years, Bollywood also has changed and have learnt to take advantage of the national holiday. Over the years, many films starring superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Ranbir Kapoor have released on this day. 

Usually, Independence Day is followed by a long weekend which means good business for Bollywood films. Hence, big releases have mostly come out on or near Independence Day. Films like Rustom, Ek Tha Tiger, Singham Returns, Bachna Ae Haseeno and many more have released on August 15 and have done huge business at the box office. Even this year, two big films, Mission Mangal and Batla House will be releasing and will be entertaining the audiences. So, here’s a look at the previous years’ releases. 

Satyamev Jayate (2018)

The film starring John Abraham as a police officer, Satyamev Jayate released last year and was one of the big releases of 2018. The film also starred Manoj Bajpayee and was the story of a cop who wanted to root out corruption from the Police department in his own way. The film grossed over Rs 100 Crores and made for a good Independence Day watch. The song, Dilbar from the films featuring Nora Fatehi is a chartbuster. 

Gold (2018)

Clashing with John Abraham’s Satyamev Jayate, Akshay Kumar starrer Gold released on Independence Day 2018. The film was the story of India’s Men's hockey team winning the 1948 Summer Olympics. Gold was Mouni Roy’s debut film and also became the first Bollywood film to be released in Saudi Arabia. The film raked in over Rs 100 Crore and Mouni Roy won the award for the best debutante as well. 

Rustom (2016)

Starring Akshay Kumar as Naval officer Rustom Pavri, Rustom was loosely based on a true story of a naval officer K. M. Nanavati. With elements of patriotism, Rustom managed to intrigue the audience and Akshay’s role as the lead actor won him the National Film Award for Best Actor for that year. The film did huge business and in the first week, Rustom raked in Rs 90 Crore. 

Singham Returns (2014)

A sequel to the story of Inspector Bajirao Singham, Singham Returns had Ajay Devgn as the lead and Kareena Kapoor Khan was cast opposite him. Rohit Shetty’s action clubbed with the story of an honest police officer who decides to fight against criminals in his own way made for a good watch. It was released on Independence Day and managed to impress the audience. The film was one of the highest grossing films of the year. The overall worldwide collection of Singham Returns was over Rs 216 Crore. 

Ek Tha Tiger (2012)

Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer Ek Tha Tiger released back in 2012 and kicked off a franchise of films. The love story of an undercover RAW agent and an ISI agent entertained the audience and set the box office on fire. Salman and Katrina’s action stunts, as well as chemistry, was loved. The film minted Rs 320 Crore worldwide and was among the highest-grossing films of that year. A sequel of the same, Tiger Zinda Hai starring Salman and Katrina came out in 2017 and was a blockbuster. 

Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008)

Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Bipasha Basu and Minissha Lamba, Bachna Ae Haseeno released back in 2008 on Independence Day. The film was the story of Raj, a guy who meets 3 women in different stages of his life and his life completely changes. The film was among the highest grossing films of that year and was directed by Siddharth Anand. 

Chak De India (2007)

A film about India’s women's hockey team winning at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, Chak De India is one of the most loved films in the filmography of Shah Rukh Khan. Starring SRK as Kabir Khan, the coach of India’s Women’s hockey team who has a dream to see India winning in the Commonwealth Games. The film also won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. At the box office, Shah Rukh’s film broke records as well and earned over Rs 127 Crores globally. 

This year too, two films are releasing. Mission Mangal starring Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Nithya Menen, Kirti Kulhari and Sharman Joshi is about ISRO's Mangalyaan and is directed by Jagan Shakti. On the other hand, Batla House starring John Abraham and Mrunal Thakur is releasing and is based on a true story. It will be interesting to see the business of both the releases.
