England on Sunday ended India’s five-match winning streak at Birmingham. The hosts produced a flamboyant show both with the bat and ball to make sure they remain in the race of semifinals. India looked in trouble right from the start as England openers dislodged their bowling line-up after winning the crucial toss.

Jason Roy who was returning from an injury put on a stunning show with Jonny Bairstow, putting Men in Blue on backfoot. The duo formed a massive stand of 160 runs.

However, Indian bowlers did make a comeback, taking a few quick wickets. Though all-rounder Ben Stokes kept the pace on. The hosts ended up making 337 runs in the allotted overs. Jonny Bairstow with 111 runs and Ben Stokes 79 runs were the star performers with the bat for England. For India, it was Mohammed Shami who scalped a five-wicket-haul while Jasprit Bumrah also bowled beautifully for his 1-44 spell.

Chasing the total, India lost opener Kl Rahul early. However, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma led the recovery. They put on a partnership of 138 runs before Kohli was sent back by Liam Plunkett. Rohit though kept getting better, scoring a fabulous hundred. Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant also joined the party later, scoring 45 and 32-run cameos respectively.

However, lastly, MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav had no reply whatsoever to English bowling attack. The experienced campaigner showed no intent as India closed on 306-5, handing England a 31-run win. The hosts now have a clear chance of making it to the next round if they defeat New Zealand in the next game.
