Written by Manoj Muntashir and sung by Arijit Singh and Shashaa Tirupati, the second song Phir Bhi Tumko Chahunga from Half-Girlfriend starring Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor is out and has been appreciated for it soulful lyrics.
We got in touch with Manoj and asked about the song going viral. In his poetic andaaz, he responded back saying,  "It was 2001, when I was in Srinagar for some work. Now picture this.. A quite, beautiful evening in Kashmir. A poet taking a stroll down the banks of Dal Lake. Trees of chinar all around. Snow cladded peaks and silent waters of Dal lake.. this was like a perfect ingredient for the genesis of immortal poetry. Next moment, a thought descended upon me…“Ye hare darakhton ke patte jab shakhon se gir jayenge…Jab jheel ka paani sookhega aur saare kawal kumhlayenge…Ye waadiyan jab so jayengi, aur aawazein kho jayengi..Meri jaan main uss khamoshi me bhi pyar ke naghme gaaunga…main phir bhi tumko chaahoonga…"
He added, "I wrote the lines in my diary and forgot for next 13 years unless one fine day my brother and Galliyan composer Ankit Tiwari heard it somewhere and insisted, this nazm should be converted into a mainstream Bollywood song."
He recently said he didn't want his lyrics to be used for Half-Girlfriend. Elaborating on it, Manoj said, "Yes, I didn't want my nazm to get converted into a Bollywood song. Reason was simple. It was written as per the meter and demands of Urdu poetry, not a film song. Shayri and song,  sound similar but are poles apart. I was sure, forcefully molding a nazm into a mainstream Bollywood song, will be a disasters. But, Mohit Suri didn't buy my argument. He had a vision that this can be a historical song if properly produced and used. Now, when the song has become a colossal hit even before the official release, I guess Mohit had a valid point. I would also like to mention, Mithoon has done what i always thought was impossible. Without changing one word from the original poetry, he made a tune India is shedding tears and spilling cans of beer over. It's a craze because of Mithoon's genius."
We asked about was it difficult for him to make his space in the industry. Explaining his point, he said, "Like any other top line industry, film industry is no cakewalk. But, if you are well equipped with talent and desire to make it big, nothing can stop you. Now, this is where the plot thickens, as talent is one commodity which everyone thinks they have. It's very important, especially for a writer to be well read. If then only you will realize where do you stand in front of the stalwarts who have left huge impressions on the pages of cinema. I get contacted by hundreds of aspiring writers every week, I am sad to say, not even 4 of them are qualified for entering and making a mark in cinema. They are driven more by enthusiasm than knowledge and real talent. We have to carry forward the legacy of Sahir, Shakil, Majrooh, Anand Bakshi, Javed Akhtar and Gulzar.. its a huge responsibility, we need very strong shoulders to carry it."
