25 years after Lagaan, Aamir Khan reunites with Ashutosh Gowariker for a sports drama, set to begin filming by September 2026.
Lagaan was an emotion, and it remains a cult classic! 25 years after creating a history with Lagaan, Aamir Khan and filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker are all set to reunite for another emotional period sports drama. Pinkvilla has exclusively learnt that the duo is teaming up for a film based on the life of legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath.
According to our sources, the film is currently in the advanced stage with multiple script reading sessions already completed. “The team is aggressively working on this story for a while now and the final draft also has creative inputs from the maverick duo Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi. It’s an emotional, inspiring sports drama set against the backdrop of the Indo-Pak partition in 1947,” revealed a source.
“The makers are aiming to take the film on floors by the end of this year with the intent to begin shooting around September 2026. Extensive prep work is already underway, and apart from Aamir Khan, another leading actor is expected to come on board to play the parallel lead, the role of Lala Amarnath’s closest friend,” adds the source.
The film will also mark Aamir Khan’s return to cricket on the big screen after the iconic Lagaan, a film that continues to remain one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated sports dramas. Aamir is extremely excited about revisiting the genre.
Earlier, Aamir had confirmed in interviews that he would be shooting three back-to-back films from September 2026 onward. Pinkvilla can now confirm that the Lala Amarnath biopic will be the first project to roll. This will reportedly be followed by filmmaker Rahul Mody’s startup-based drama alongside Shraddha Kapoor, and then the much-awaited sequel to 3 Idiots, starring Aamir alongside Vicky Kaushal, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi. 3 Idiots sequel goes on floors in second half of 2027.
