For nearly two decades, the Dhamaal franchise has remained one of India’s most loved comedy brands, entertaining audiences across generations with its unique blend of chaos, adventure and humour. As filmmaker Indra Kumar gears up for the release of Dhamaal 4, he reflects on what has kept the franchise alive and thriving for so long. Now, in an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, director Indra Kumar opens up on Dhamaal 4.
“It's a great franchise to make because there are great actors in it and it has more chance to explore for me to go into different genres and do bigger and bigger stuff,” Kumar says. According to him, the secret behind Dhamaal’s enduring popularity lies in its ability to deliver wholesome entertainment that families can enjoy together. “People have come to see comedy,” he adds, emphasizing that making audiences laugh remains the franchise’s biggest responsibility.
Creating Comedy Amid Chaos
While comedy may look effortless on screen, Kumar insists it is one of the toughest genres to crack. This time, the challenge was making audiences laugh in the middle of large-scale action and disaster sequences.
“Now we are stuck in a storm. You can say that your intention, but I have to create comedy in that full hurricane or storm going on. A ship is sinking and we are doing comedy,” he explains. “That is the tough part. But that I enjoy because that is what people have come to see.”
Describing Dhamaal 4 for fans eagerly waiting for it, Kumar hints at a larger-than-life adventure packed with danger, treasure hunts and relentless humour. “There are too many hurdles and too many things happening. To get to that money is a task in itself. It is very life-risking for all the characters. But in that, we have to create comedy. That is the real challenge.”
Pressure? Not Quite Anymore
Interestingly, Kumar believes filmmaking challenges have become easier over time thanks to technological advancements. Recalling the filming of the original Dhamaal, he shared a frightening experience involving aerial photography.
“I shot the plane sequence actually from a chopper. The door was open and the cameraman was strapped while we were hanging from the helicopter,” he says. “I almost died up there. If the strap breaks, I go straight into the valley with my camera and cameraman.”
Today, visual effects can recreate many such sequences safely. “Now it is easier. The special effects are there. All those things can be achieved without risking lives,” he says.
As the franchise has grown, so have audience expectations. While the humour remains central, Indra Kumar now focuses on creating larger adventures and more ambitious situations while ensuring comedy remains the driving force. The balancing act between spectacle and laughter has become his biggest creative challenge.
Is Dhamaal 5 Already on His Mind?
The answer is yes, but with a condition.
“I have many ideas, but I can’t boil down to one,” Kumar reveals. “Because I don't know how people react to this picture. What they react to in this picture is going to be my next plan.”
For him, audience feedback shapes the future of the franchise. “People might not like something, so I will avoid those things and try to get something newer. But definitely again bigger,” he says.
Beyond Dhamaal, Kumar also admits that other sequels occasionally cross his mind. “Sometimes I feel I should make a Beta Part 2. Why not? If I am in a mood, I will make it,” he says, while fondly recalling classics like Dil and Raja.
