After the success of Lagaan, Aamir Khan and filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker are gearing up to reunite exactly after 25 years for a new film based on the life of legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath. Pinkvilla first exclusively reported on May 8 that the duo of Aamir and Ashutosh is reuniting and the film is a partition-era sports biopic, backed by Rajkumar Hirani.

Now, Pinkvilla has exclusively learnt that Farhan Akhtar is in talks to join the project in a pivotal role. According to sources, Farhan is being considered to play Lala Amarnath’s best friend in the film, a character who was originally a part of undivided India but moves to Pakistan post-partition.

"Aamir Khan plays Lala Amarnath in the film, which is essentially a friendship story set against the backdrop of cricket and partition. Farhan Akhtar is in talks for the role of his closest friend. The emotional dynamics between the two characters form the heart of the narrative," revealed a source.

The source further adds, "The story is by Rajkumar Hirani, with strong creative inputs from him and Abhijat Joshi on the screenplay as well. The film is being produced by Aamir Khan along with Excel Entertainment and Rajkumar Hirani, and is expected to go on floors by around October 2026 with a start-to-finish schedule."

The ambitious project marks the reunion of Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker exactly 25 years after Lagaan, one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated films.

For the unversed, Lala Amarnath was India's first cricket captain and captained India in their first Test series win against Pakistan in 1952. He passed away on 5th August 2000 at 88. Apart from the sports drama with Ashutosh Gowariker, Aamir Khan is also expected to be a part of director Rahul Mody’s next start-up drama, as well as the Rajkumar Hirani-directed 4 Idiots.
