Speaking with Hindi Rush, Jyothi Venkatesh recalled meeting Thalapathy Vijay on two occasions. The journalist said, “Do baar mulakat hui. Ek bar main ne Bipasha (Basu) ko interview karne ke liye set pe gaya tha, Chennai mein. Woh Tamil film kar rahi thi.”

(We met twice. Once, I had gone to the set in Chennai to interview Bipasha Basu. She was working on a Tamil film there.)

Watch the interview here:

“Uske saath main baat kar raha tha. Producer ne aake introduce kiya, ‘Vijay,’ unhone sirf kaha, ‘Vanakkam’ (by folding his hands). Shakehand nahi, bas Vanakkam, aur woh chale gaye. Baat hi nayi kiya. Bipasha bolti hain, ‘Yeh aadmi baat hi nahi karta. Main heroine hun, mujhse baat nahi karta hain, tumse kya baat karega.’ Bahut hi serious aur soft spoken hain. Apna kaam karo aur nikal jao, ek toh dar tha uss waqt Hindi bhi nahi janta tha, aur English bhi nahi janta tha. Toh usko kya pata ke main Tamilian hun. Toh usne socha hoga ke Hindi ya English mein baat karunga,” the journalist added.

(I was talking with her when the producer came and introduced me to Vijay. He simply said ‘Vanakkam’ with folded hands. No handshake, just a greeting, and then he left. He didn’t speak at all. Bipasha said, ‘He never talks. I’m the heroine and he doesn’t even talk to me, so why would he talk to you?’

He is very serious and soft-spoken. He just does his work and leaves. Back then, he didn’t know Hindi or English, and he probably didn’t know that I was Tamilian either. So he might have assumed I would speak to him in Hindi or English.)

Jyothi further said, “Lekin woh ek ambitious ladka tha. Hardworking tha. Uske daddy Chandrasekhar aur uski mummy Shobha, dono industry ke seniors hain. Unka beta hain, toh naturally unka woh seriousness inherit kiya hain.”

(But he was an ambitious boy and very hardworking. His father, Chandrasekhar, and his mother, Shoba, are both seniors in the industry. Being their son, he naturally inherited that seriousness.)

For those unaware, Thalapathy Vijay and Bipasha Basu had worked together in Sachein, which also starred Genelia Deshmukh as the female lead.
