What importance does World Dance Day hold to you?

As a dancer, it's basically a New Year for all the dancers. It's the day we celebrate and it's D-day for us.

What made you come up with the idea of making a film based on street dancing?

So, this my third dance film and I have already done two dance films which are ABCD and ABCD 2. This one I wanted to do differently than what I have done before. This is when I went on the streets and the story is very close to my heart. I am very excited about this film.

Considering Varun and Shraddha have already worked together in your film ABCD 2, the audience has a lot of expectations from this one. As a director, how much do you think the leads have improved in their dancing skills?

They are amazing and very hard working. They have improved in dancing. I've worked with them in ABCD 2 and they've worked really hard. But for Street Dancer, they are working even harder because they know they have to do better than ABCD 2 in this film. Working with them is amazing because they are actors who put 100 per cent in everything they do.

You've always been vocal about how Michael Jackson has been your inspiration. But your journey is also quite inspiring and many aspiring dancers look up to you. How does it feel?

I feel great and glad that people take me as an inspiration. I just want to tell my story and inspire people so that they should not lose hope. If I can do it, they can do it. I am happy that people take me as an inspiration.

No one really thought that there can be movies in Bollywood solely based on dance. But you can be given the credit for making dance a genre in the Hindi film industry. What really prompted you to do so?

When I came as a dancer, I saw that there is no film on dance. People said that they are making a dance film, but they never used to make it. They used to make something else and say that it's a musical, so it's a dance film. So, I wanted to be the first one to make a dance film. And that's how ABCD happened.
