Afghanistan cricket team’s ex Skipper who led the team to the ICC World Cup 2019 claims that that the senior players in the squad were deliberately not performing throughout the tournament. Post World Cup, Gulbadin Naib was removed from the Captainship and 20 year old Rashid Khan is now made the team’s new Skipper across all the format of the game.

As reported by an Afghanistan journalist, Gulbadin Naib claimed that the senior players didn’t give any attention to him and were spotted laughing after defeats instead of being sad. “We depend mostly on senior players in the World Cup but they were deliberately not performing, not giving attention to me, they were laughing instead of being sad after defeats and even not looking at me when asked to bowl,” quoted by an Afghanistan journalist.

Afghanistan ended their campaign at the bottom of the points table and failed to register a single win in the entire World Cup tournament. However, the team managed to give tough fight to some of the top teams in the world including the Men in Blue. They lost against India in a close encounter by only 11 runs where the Indian middle order collapsed against the Afghan bowling. Against the Men in Green, Afghanistan managed to take the game to the very last over of the match and eventually lost the game by 2 balls left.
