Until before Avengers: Endgame released, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans were worried that Captain America would meet his death. The First Avenger is known for his sacrificial characteristic and fans emotionally prepared themselves to bid Steve Rogers goodbye. Chris Evans fueled the speculations of Cap's death when he tweeted he was hanging the shield. However, the events took a different turn in Avengers: Endgame. Steve did kiss Captain America goodbye but instead of going into the arms of death, he went back into time and embraced the arms of Peggy Carter.

Avengers: Endgame writers have now revealed that there was an ulterior motive behind keeping Cap alive. Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely appeared at the San Diego Comic-Con 2019 over the weekend and spilled the beans. According to a Comicbook.com report, the duo revealed that while it was too easy to kill Captain America, they chose because the superhero's arc was changing.

"It's too easy. That guy will jump on a grenade every movie. Tony's going one way and Steve is going another. Over the course of many movies, Tony is going from selfish to selfless and Steve's not doing exactly the opposite but he's certainly starting at selfless and learning to get a life and to be self-interested. When he makes the decision at the end to go back, put his shield down, and be the soldier that comes back from war, that's the biggest journey. Jumping on another grenade is not a move for him," McFeely explained.

Meanwhile, the Russo Brothers wanted Steve to have a gruesome death. According to Entertainment Weekly, Joe and Anthony Russo revealed, "We clung to that storyline for so long just for that moment of Thanos walking through a portal and dropping Captain America’s severed head." However, they chose to go against their plan given it would have been too dark. “Thanos is a rough dude," Anthony added.
