Recently, some of the members of the team behind Avengers: Endgame sat down for an interview with Slashfilm where they spoke about the gigantic task of putting all the emotions of different characters in one parallel line. The film’s editor Jeff Ford was also there and talked about the alternate reunion scene that they came up with before the one we saw. It was one of the most important scenes of the film and needed to be beyond perfect.

Jeff went on to reveal the alternate reunion scene in-between Tony and Peter. As he said, “The first time we shot it, Peter and Tony reunite and Pepper’s nearby, and Tony goes, ‘Uh, Peter, do you know Pepper? Nice to meet you!’” Ford continued. “It’s one of those crazy meet-cutes in the middle of a fight. He hugs him and they have this thing, but it felt very incidental like they ran into each other at an airport or something.”

Jeff then talked about the time when he and his team started noticing the level of importance this scene has for the audience. As he said, “We watched it, and they were both great in the scene, but it was like a comedy scene, so it had this schtick quality to it. By the way, we did not yet know how powerful Peter disappearing was when we shot that first version. We had shot it, I think, but we hadn’t tested it, we hadn’t lived with it and actually done the [effect] of [him] going away, so when the audience had that reaction, we’re like, this reunion is different now. It’s a different thing.”

Avengers: Endgame broke all the records out with some hearts too, as Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man said goodbye to the MCU forever. But he will always be credited for the rise of this whole MCU universe. Marvel Studios is lining up a lot of projects and the first in the queue after Endgame is Black Widow that is going to release next year.
