For 11 years, we played witness to Robert Downey Jr returning to the screen and essaying the role of Iron Man. From 2008, the actor has donned several suits. With every appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man was seen with a new and enhanced Iron Man suit. Every new suit designed to protect Tony Stark from any danger, be it on Earth or in the outer space. However, his last suit wasn't designed to save the superhero and Tony knew it.

RDJ made the revelation when he appeared in a new episode of Off Camera with Sam Jones. The 54-year-old actor discussed Iron Man's arc through the years. He shed light on the evolution of the superhero character and went on to reveal that though Tony Stark was suited up, he knew he was going to probably sacrifice himself in the epic Avengers: Endgame battle. "The last one is not designed to be able to do its job and have you make it past it," he confessed, as per an Insider report.

"The last suit he has isn't even designed for him to be able to survive using it," he added. "The first suit is all about 'Will this get me and my ego and my precious physical frame out of this cave I'm in and into the desert, where maybe the cavalry can come get me and bring me back to my stupid life?'" he explained.

"The last one is not designed to be able to do its job and have you make it past it. So that's the great, you know, Joseph Campbell mythology of, like, ultimately you go from refusing the call and being a serendipitous hero and by the end you're willing to give the ultimate sacrifice, your life, despite your family and your groundedness and your desire to not want to do that, so that that community can thrive," he shared.

Speaking about Tony's arc, the actor said that the superhero underwent a "complete 180" change. "It started off with someone who's absolutely self-centered, has more money than they could ever spend, is spiritually dead, and has no idea that they're about to go through a crucible that is going to put them in a position to be of service to their community," he said.
