It has been one long journey for Robert Downey Jr. The oldest member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe bowed down this summer with the release of Avengers: Endgame. The international actor essayed the role of Iron Man aka Tony Stark for 11 long years before he kissed the MCU character goodbye in April this year. The 54-year-old star adopted the superhero role like it was his second skin. Now that his journey with Marvel Studios has officially come to an end, Downey Jr recently sat down to speak about his run as the Iron Man and the future outside MCU.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor said that while to the outside world it may appear that Downey Jr and Tony Stark's personalities were merging, the actor said that he made sure to keep his true character away from his on-screen role. He said he adopted a theatre trick called "aesthetic distance" to distance himself from Iron Man.

"I am not my work. I am not what I did with that studio. I am not that period of time that I spent playing this character. And it sucks, because the kid in all of us wants to be like, 'No. It's always going to be summer camp and we're all holding hands and singing 'Kumbaya'," he told THR.

"Initially, by creating and associating and synergizing with Tony Stark and the Marvel Universe … and being a good company man, but also being a little off kilter, being creative and getting into all these other partnerships, it was a time when … what do they say? Owners start looking like their pets," he added.

Looking at the future, Downey said he was preparing to explore some uncharted territories and step out his safe house aka MCU. "There's always a dependency on something that feels like a sure thing. It's the closest I will ever come to being a trust fund kid," he said. "I have not been forced to explore the new frontier of what is my creative and personal life after this. It's always good to get ahead of where you are about to be," he added.

"If you put eyes on 'that's going to be a big turn down there, spring of '19,' I better start psychically getting on top of that. … It's always in the transitions between one phase and the next phase that people fall apart," Downey said.

All said and done, we won't be able to detach you from Iron Man. You will always and forever be our Iron Man. The actor will be seen in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle. He will also reprise his role as the famous detective Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Holmes 3. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.
