Avengers: Endgame saw the greatest MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) villain till date, Thanos' defeat by Iron Man's sacrificial act. However, there was a chance to defeat him well in advance, specifically during the events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018). While fighting Thanos in Titan to stop him from retrieving the Time Stone from Doctor Strange, Tony Stark and crew device a plan to remove the Infinity Gauntlet off of Thanos' hand. However, when Peter Quill aka Star-Lord finds out that Thanos killed the love of his life, Gamora, he loses control.

Many MCU fans laid blame on Star-Lord for Thanos being able to defeat all the superheroes and snap half the universe to mere dust. But, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are defending Peter's actions in Infinity War stating that he was "not out of character," according to their interview with Backstory Magazine. Christopher stated that Thanos was going to take the Time Stone and hence, a victorious battle was never in question. Stephen shared, "We made sure they don’t lose their personality in doing that. I saw, particularly in the aftermath of Infinity War, how many people were really angry at Peter Quill for f*****g the whole thing up, but it’s completely in his character." Markus added that Quill is going to go nuts because his girlfriend was murdered and hence his reaction was justified.

"It’s not just rage that his girlfriend was killed. It’s a very strange situation of, ‘I should’ve killed her first, and I failed," Christopher stated.
