Black Widow: Is Hawkeye the taskmaster? Here’s what the FAN THEORIES predict

Marvel trailers never fail to provide fresh content for fan theories. Every time the studio drops a teaser or a trailer of its upcoming films, the theorists go all out and try to predict a possible storyline by breaking down easter eggs. The first trailer for Black Widow was dropped earlier this month, giving fans a sneak peek into the world of Natasha Romanoff and also, the very first glimpse at the mysterious Taskmaster, who seems to be the villain of the story. While the identity of the person behind the mask is not yet disclosed, one theory suggests that it's Clint Barton aka Hawkeye.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Natasha and Clint’s friendship goes way back than the formation of Avengers, but that has not stopped the fan theories from considering him as the Taskmaster. The reason why fans believe that there is a possibility that the Taskmaster might actually turn out to Clint is that, in the trailer, the villain can be seen using a bow and arrow, which happens to be Hawkeye’s weapon of choice. And while this is the first time the villain has entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it has been a part of Marvel’s comic books since forever. And for unversed, the villain is known for his ability to replicate other people’s powers, both physically and mentally.

The trailer also clearly shows that both Clint and Nick Fury will have a part in the superhero’s story. So, putting two and two together, many fans have come together to theorise that Hawkeye is the Taskmaster. However, there is one huge detail that needs to be considered before coming to a conclusion- Taskmaster’s ability to mimic other people’s superpowers. It is possible that at some point in the film, Taskmaster has somehow successfully gained Clint’s powers and that would explain why he can be seen using the bow and arrow.

However, some theories suggest that the scene from the trailer could be a flashback and Hawkeye was serving as a Taskmaster who was trying to hunt down Natasha before she ever made her way to the Avengers. Just like Natasha's claim in The Avengers: "Agent Barton was sent to kill me. He made a different call." Meaning, that the term "Taskmaster" is not so much a name of a Marvel villain but a title.

There are various theories claiming various story angles but for now, it seems the fans would have to wait for the film to hit the movie theatres to know for sure. The upcoming standalone Black Widow movie falls somewhere between Captain America: Civil War and Avenger’s Infinity War, which means she is still very much alive and kicking in action. During a recent interview, the actress clarified that the film is not an origin story, but tried to tighten some loose ends in Black Widow’s existing storyline.

The film is scheduled to release on May 1, 2020.
