BTS becomes first Asian act to win IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award; Taylor Swift & Drake follow
After placing #2 and #7 in 2018 and 2019, BTS were crowned as the winners of 2020’s IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award. Check out the Top 10 list below.
Breaking and making records is in BTS' DNA and with 2020 being as monumental as it was for the South Korean septet, it comes as no surprise that RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook were announced as the winners of 2020’s IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award. For the unversed, IFPI's (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) prestigious honour is calculated on the basis of an artist or group's "worldwide performance across digital and physical music formats" for that year which includes streams to vinyl and covers their entire body of work.
With BTS standing atop the IFPI Global Artist Chart; which reveals the Top 10 best-selling artists of the year on a global scale, the boy group becomes the first Asian and South Korean act to achieve this impressive milestone. Moreover, BTS is also the first act to be named IFPI's #1 best-selling artist of the year who records primarily in a non-English language. BTS was extremely close to ranking atop 2018’s IFPI Global Artist Chart but came in hot at #2 instead, just behind Drake. Moreover, in 2019, BTS placed #7.
As for the 2020 list, following BTS at #2 and #3 are Taylor Swift and Drake. While Taylor topped IFPI's chart last year and in 2014, Drake placed #1 in 2018 and 2016 respectively. Drake, who recently dropped Scary Hours 2 EP, continues his successful run in IFPI's list as this is the fourth time in the last five years that the What’s Next rapper has found a place in the Top 3. Interestingly, UK artists Ed Sheeran, Adele and One Direction had topped the list in 2017, 2015 and 2013 respectively. Back to the 2020 list; The Weeknd and Billie Eilish took over #4 and #5 while completing the Top 10, we had Eminem at #6, Post Malone at #7, Ariana Grande at #8, the late Juice WRLD at #9 and Justin Bieber at #10.
BTS placing atop the IFPI Global Artist Chart for 2020 is well-deserved as the K-pop group blessed ARMY with Map of the Soul: 7 (No. 1 on Billboard 200 with 422,000 album-equivalent units, including 347,000 pure album sales), their fourth Japanese album Map of the Soul: 7 – The Journey (sold 500,000 copies in its first two days of release and also broke the record as the best-selling album by a male foreign artist when it comes to first week sales), Dynamite (BTS' first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single), Savage Love Remix (No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100) and BE (No. 1 on Billboard 200) with the lead single Life Goes On debuting at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 with all tracks, barring Skit, placing in the prestigious chart.
IFPI's Chief Executive, Frances Moore, congratulated BTS on their historic accolade saying, "BTS are a global phenomenon. They have had another outstanding year, releasing three albums, and continually finding creative and engaging ways to share their story with the world. They truly show the power that music has to bring joy and happiness to people the world over. We would like to congratulate RM, Jin, SUGA, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook and we are excited to see what they have in store next
Congratulations, BTS! The sky's truly the limit for you beautiful boys!
