Emmy Award winning actor Rip Torn passes away at 88; Men in Black co star Will Smith pays tribute

Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning actor Rip Torn has sadly passed away at the age of 88. The actor was well known for his role as late-night producer Artie in Larry Sanders. Men in Black co-star Will Smith took to Instagram to pay tribute to the late actor.

In some heartbreaking news, television, film and theatre actor Rip Torn has sadly passed away at the age of 88, according to Associated Press. Rip's publicist revealed in a statement that the star passed away on Tuesday, i.e. July 10, 2019, at his home. By Torn's side was his wife, Amy Wright as well as his children, Katie Torn and Angelica Page. The cause of death is yet to be revealed. Rip is an Oscar-nominated actor who was up for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Cross Creek (1983).

Torn became a household name for his portrayal of late-night producer Artie in Larry Sanders (1992-1998). Larry Sanders also starred Garry Shandling and Jeffrey Tambor. For the show, Rip was nominated for six Emmys and won one in 1996. He was also nominated for his work in other shows like The Atlanta Child Murders, Chicago Hope and 30 Rock. When it comes to his movie credits, Torn starred alongside Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black (1997) and its sequel as Zed. Will took to his Instagram page to pay tribute to his co-star. Sharing a still from the Men in Black franchise, Will simply wrote, "R.I.P. Rip."

Rip was also seen in DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story (2004) and 3 Weeks to Daytona (2011).

Albert Brooks, who directed Rip in Defending Your Life (1991) tweeted, "R.I.P Rip Torn. He was so great in Defending Your Life.  I'll miss you Rip, you were a true original."
