Game of Thrones ended on an extremely controversial note as the last season, which aired between April-May 2019, was widely panned by diehard fans who blamed showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for the poor writing and lack of focus on character arcs. One character, in particular, who they felt was treated poorly was Daenerys Targaryen. Season 8 saw Khaleesi's transformation to the Mad Queen as she defeated Cersei Lannister to claim herself as the Queen of Westeros.

While fans were baffled by this move, Peter Dinklage defended D&D's choice when he was interviewed by The New Yorker. Peter, who we know as the inimitable Tyrion Lannister, explained that Game of Thrones' ending was like breaking up with somebody as fans didn't want the iconic series to end. Hence, they took out their anger on David and Dan. However, Peter stressed that what D&D did with the final season was extraordinary. "There were signposts all along the way for that character," Dinklage offered when speaking about Dany's fascist turn.

"She went mad. She was driven to that, and she’s a victim as well in terms of how she was treated. She went through it, and she came out angry, as a lot of us do," the 50-year-old actor reasoned.

Meanwhile, Peter may have been the lone wolf to win an Emmy at Emmys 2019 for Game of Thrones Season 8 but the actor was snubbed at the Golden Globes in the Supporting Actor category. Eventually, it was only Kit Harington who scored a nomination for Game of Thrones at Golden Globes 2020.
