Martin Scorsese was put under the scanner by the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) fans for his comment that Marvel movies are "not cinema". While talking to Empire magazine about his latest directorial The Irishman, the Oscar-winning director had stated, "I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks." Many celebrities associated with the MCU spoke against Martin's comment, which included Samuel L. Jackson, Simu Liu, Joss Whedon and James Gunn.

James, who will be helming Guardians of the Galaxy 3 had taken to Twitter to tweet, "Martin Scorsese is one of my 5 favorite living filmmakers. I was outraged when people picketed The Last Temptation of Christ without having seen the film. I’m saddened that he’s now judging my films in the same way." Taking a stance against Scorsese's comment is Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula in the MCU. "I would absolutely say that Marvel movies are cinema. Cinema is story-telling with visuals," Karen stated to The Hollywood Reporter.

"There's so much heart and soul, and it's James' soul in there. He injects so much of his own personality, his sense of humor ... that's a very big representation of who he is as a person and therefore it's very cinematic. He's an artist," the Avengers: Endgame star added while speaking in defense of Gunn.
