From one singer passing on advice to another. Kelly Clarkson opened up on giving some advice to fellow musician Taylor Swift on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Sunday night. Back in June, Swift’s back catalog for all 6 of her multiplatinum albums was purchased by famed music manager Scooter Braun, and Swift was not happy about it. This led to an ugly outburst with many musicians taking sides. Kelly, who sided with Taylor, had encouraged her then to re-record her songs and take back ownership.

At the time, Kelly had tweeted, "Just a thought, U should go in & re-record all the songs that U don’t own the masters on exactly how U did them but put brand new art & some kind of incentive so fans will no longer buy the old versions. I’d buy all of the new versions just to prove a point."

Speaking on the show, Kelly revealed that she got the idea from her mother-in-law, Reba McEntire. She had re-recorded and released all of her original songs in order to take ownership of the catalog. Clarkson shared. "I wasn't really trying to defend or offend anyone. It was more like, Reba [McEntire] told me she did that. That was it. That was all...  She wanted to own her masters. And I was like, 'Well if it's that important to you, like find a way.' And she recut all of her music and did it with the same musicians, the same everything. That's where I got the idea."
