Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson open up about Scorsese's Marvel criticismMartin Scorsese became the talk of the town after he called out Marvel and other superhero movies in October. The legendary filmmaker deemed Marvel movies are "not cinema" and cause a commotion among Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. Following the frenzy, several Marvel stars and actors came out to call out the Oscar-winning director. While the controversy refuses to die down, the Taxi Driver has spoken about superhero movies yet again and this time, he shared his own definition of cinema.

Discussing his controversial Marvel-lashing statements with Popcorn with Peter Travers, Martin first confessed that he has watched one or two superhero movies and couldn't differentiate much between the two. While he accepted that Marvel movies could be cinema to "kids seeing those films," he personally doesn't get the movies. "Or least let me put it this way: I’ve seen one or two, that’s enough. Because it’s the same thing over and over, you know?" he said.

When prompted to explain what cinema means to him, Scorsese carefully worded his response and said, “I think what makes cinema, to me… ultimately, it’s something that, for some reason, stays with you so that a few years later you can watch it again. Or ten years later you watch it again, and it’s different."

Scorsese's recent statements on the franchise and superhero movies have left the industry divided. While several acclaimed filmmakers came out to support Scorsese, stars like Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, James Gunn and Taika Waititi defended the superhero movies.
