He might be one of the flagbearers of Marvel Cinematic Universe but Robert Downey Jr might have not ended up in MCU in the first place. Before RDJ was cast as the Iron Man, the actor had a few controversies associated with his name. From his drug and alcohol abuse to his admission into rehab, Downey wasn't the brightest star when Iron Man was being made. Given these factors, Marvel Studios had double thoughts before roping in RDJ for the movie.

Marvel Studios casting director Sarah Finn sat down for an interview for Avengers: Endgame bonus features on Disney+ and revealed the discussions taking place at Marvel Studios. She revealed that RDJ wasn't necessarily a "family-friendly" face. However, Jon Favreau was convinced Downey would be the ideal Tony Stark aka Iron Man.

"Robert Downey, Jr., at that point in his career, wasn't necessarily a 'family-friendly' name. There were concerns about, was he an action her? Was he a name that would promote a family movie? Jon was in love with the idea of Downey playing the part and we all felt so sure about him on a creative level... Because he wasn't instantly a slam-dunk approval, as we were reading other people and looking at it, I suggested we had screen tests and let the best person win," she said, as reported by Comicbook.com.

Sarah also recalled RDJ's audition and shared that he was singing "God, I Hope I Get It" from A Chorus Line before he got in front of the cameras. But he blew everyone's mind when he got under the skin of Tony and bagged the role. Can you imagine Marvel Cinematic Universe without Robert Downey Jr? We know we can't! Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.
