Neil Patrick Harris recently weighed in the topic of whether straight actors should get to play gay characters and vice versa. In an interview with The Times, Neil Patrick Harris opened up about how he feels about straight characters playing gay, and he’s all for it! For the unversed, the 47-year-old actor, who is homosexual in real life has played straight and gay characters in his career. In fact, Neil’s most memorable character of Barney on How I Met Your Mother, was a straight character.

In his chat with The Times, the actor said that “there’s something sexy about casting a straight actor to play a gay role.” He added that only if the actor is willing to invest a lot into it. He then reminisced that he played a character for nine years who was nothing like his own self. So he thinks people should just hire the best actor for the part. He added, “In our world that we live in you can’t really as a director demand that [an actor be gay or straight]. Who’s to determine how gay someone is?”

Previously, in November 2020, Kristen Stewart also weighed in on the debate and revealed that she thinks about this often to Variety. She reflected on her journey to finding herself and added that she wouldn’t want her own story to be told by someone who’s not experienced it, having said that, she added that it’s a slippery slope conversation because that means she could never play another straight character if she was going to hold everyone to the letter of this particular law.
