This powerhouse director is rapidly becoming the talk of town after he managed to captivate audiences and critics alike at such a young age. Read on to know more about him!

Who is Obsession director Curry Barker?

If you've found yourself completely spellbound by the complex storytelling of Obsession and are wondering about the mastermind behind the camera, you are in the right place. Here is a deep dive into the journey of Curry Barker.

The 26-year-old American filmmaker, YouTuber, comedian, and actor has become Hollywood’s biggest success story of 2026. Hailing from Alabama, the young filmmaker had an interest in horror from a young age. With a dream to pursue acting, he left home at eighteen to study at the New York Film Academy campus in Los Angeles.

Back in 2023, film producer James Harris communicated to Barker that he would want to adapt his horror short film The Chair into a feature. This is when he pitched the ideas of his 2025 film Obsession to him. Before making waves in traditional cinema, Barker built a massive digital following on YouTube alongside his creative partner Cooper Tomlinson.

Together, they ran the popular sketch comedy channel ‘that's a bad idea’ which has over 1.2 million subscribers. He used his channel to showcase his writing, directing, and editing talent by dropping a series of viral short horror films and sketches.

While Barker made his feature directorial debut in 2024 with the micro-budget film Milk and Serial, it is his recent psychological horror thriller, Obsession, that completely broke the box office.

Starring Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston, the film was produced on a small budget. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in late 2025 in the Midnight Madness section, where it won first runner-up for the People's Choice Award.

Released theatrically in mid-May 2026, the film became an overnight sensation fuelled by massive word-of-mouth and viral social media traction. Within just a few weeks of its release, it shattered records, yielding an astronomical return on investment of over 100 times its budget.

Following the massive success of Obsession, Barker has quickly become one of the most sought-after horror directors in the industry, reportedly with multiple deals and future projects in his kitty.
